I run a mix of conventional and command control on my layout. Occasionally when the little ones come over to see my trains they like to blow the whistles. For most of my conventional engines the only way to do that is to push the lever on the side of the ZW. Is there a way I could wire up a remote button so the kids could get to the whistle a little more easily?

If you're talking the postwar ZW and pre-electronic whistles, be advised that pressing the lever also increases track voltage to account for the added voltage drop caused by the load of the whistle motor
If you could get your hands on a Lionel 5906 whistle button (it would go in series with the hot wire to the center rail) You could put it where ever you wanted so the little ones could have a lot of fun.

To expand on this, Lionel suggests using 2, 5906's to activate both bell and whistle/horn. Hookup instructions were usually found within an engines manual.
Lionel used to produce the 5904 to access both sounds.

Here's one I built for both whistle and bell. You only need SPST-NO pushbuttons, those were just what was in the junkbox.
