Rich, awhile ago you posted that you were working on a new video. Is it finished yet? Will it be available at this York next week or online? I'm sure I'm not the only one wondering about this.
Thanks, Rick

Hi Rick, Rich posted news about his next video a few days ago. He said the video should be available for the October York .
Here's the link to Rich's thread https://ogrforum.com/t...0-with-scale-coupler
Thanks, Alex
Thanks, Alex. I'm looking forward to it.

Hey Rick.
The plan is October York. Its going well and I'm about half way there. Working on it now actually.
I have all the trains, lights, cameras, etc i need including this 4K camera which is just amazing. I can't publish 4k video, however it gives me the advantage of cropping video down to High definition (Blu-Ray)! This means I can pan without moving the camera for super smooth panning and zooming effects. Also, I can get better depth of field which means elongated train shots are much more in focus over the whole train and more real looking. The bummer is I expect that most people will still opt for the DVD which is much lower quality and miss out on the high quality images. To incentivize I plan on having a 30min+ bonus section on the Blu-Ray only. Basically just train action. This is mainly because Blu-Ray can hold a much long video than DVD, about two hours. I may even fill it up and it will only cost a few bucks more. I'll just charge the extra amount it costs me. In fact the DVD is limited to about 1hr unless you use double sided like my second DVD. Blu-ray players are dirt cheap these days, and even small HD TVs are not that expensive.
Thanks for asking.
Rich
Rich,
Could you just upload some running to your Youtube channel? I REALLY love your layout!
Hi Rich,
Another great job - thank you for sharing. Looking forward to your next video as well.
Regarding the rail coloring. As your picture shows, you airbrush the paint on the rails. Do you do (or can do) this while with the track already is installed on the layout? My question may seem silly, but I have never used an airbrush and am not familiar with their capabilities. I have been using regular brushes of all types and sizes for the work that I have done, but now I am strongly considering getting an airbrush.
Thanks!
Alex
Max,
I'll try but that's time away from the next video.
Alex,
You can definitely airbrush the track after it is installed. That's how I did it. Those photos were from screen shots of the part II video where I showed step by step how I did the track weathering. I intentionally wanted to airbrush after the ballast because if you look at real track ballast, you can see the ballast is darker (dark brown/rust) color around the rails. This is probably from brake dust or rusted metal filings or whatever, I don't really know for sure, but I wanted some overspray on to the ballast to match the look. I did hand paint the first coat so I did not over do the overspray before the rails got covered. If you have not seen part II, its very helpful.
Rich.
I'm in for a fourth video. Blu-ray of course. Always superb work Rich!
Hey Rich.
Will you be at York next week? If so please bring 10-15 Part 3 videos as I'm out of stock, include both Blu-ray and dvd.
thanks. jim r
Hi Rich, I am really new to a lot of this. How do you go about getting your videos and where do I check what is on which video?

Mike,

You can click on the link above and preview all three videos and purchase them there as well using a credit card. Using a credit card with PayPal is the fastest, easiest (for you and me) and safest way to buy. I have sold thousands of videos this way, in fact I would say 95% or more have been sold through PayPal. If you buy today, it ships the next working day. If you pay by check it takes much longer and it could get lost. However, if you want to pay by check, you can click on the "CONTACT" link on the left and send me an email. I will respond with mailing instructions and price.
Each video is different and together they cover almost everything on how I built my layout. They are about half construction and half train action on each video. The best value is to buy all three.
Thank you.
Jim,
As usual I'm 50-50 and its a game time decision. And every time I go. lol. So if I come I will certainly bring the videos. The good weather forecast is pushing it to 60-40 in favor because of the nice ride in the vette, but the fact that I have to take off Monday from work puts me back to 50-50. See you next week!
Rich
Rich, thanks for the info. I have your first 3 vids and really enjoy watching them. Can't wait for number 4.
Thanks, Rick
Rich, FWIW, I am one who appreciates full HD - Blue Ray - so that would be the version I would get.
Rich we have your three videos but if you are going to have IV at York I would like to get one... Blue Ray. Please let us know how to make this happen. They are really good.
Thanks
Bill

Rich, consumers are a tough breed to predict. I, for one, have left DVD media in the dust -- preferring the pristine quality of well-produced blu-ray offerings. The last blu-ray purchase from you as well as those from OGR are magnificent.
Blu-ray players can be had at Best Buy for $60 or so, and they're light enough to be tossed around like a frisbee -- although I wouldn't recommend doing that. The point being though, these things are cranked out in Asian factories like toothpicks, and they're meant to be disposable... cheaper to replace than to have service/fixed. The days of of hefty videophile/audiophile that could break your foot if you dropped them are over (except of course for heavy-duty amps and pre-amps).
The thing that's most frustrating about videos being offered on media today occurs when studios that once offered blu-ray versions of something are now back-peddling to only offer DVD releases. CBS TV leads the way in this horrid practice. They offered the first 3 seasons of the new Hawaii Five-O on blu-ray, and are now only offering subsequent seasons on DVD. Most notably because the DVD's are less expensive to produce AND they're hoping enthusiasts will succumb to buying the DVD version now and then a subsequent blu-ray version when the empty-suits decide to re-issue the titles down the road.
Your Black Diamond videos have been excellent to date. Looking forward to seeing your next one... in HD, of course!
David
Blu-ray is the way to go,
Bill,
Sorry, the new video (Part IV) will not be ready until next York.
David,
Thanks. When I first attempted to have Blu-Ray's dubbed (glass master) a several years ago, they were quite a bit more expensive and I was unable to do it. Instead, I had them duplicated (manually burned) yet they were still over three times the cost of DVDs. I believe the main reason is licensing costs and not manufacturing cost. That may be what happened with the Hawaii Five-O Blu-Ray, they didn't want to pay the extra price. However, its stores much more data and is much higher resolution, so you get what you pay for.
Just a question for those in the know. Can you play a regular DVD in a Blu-ray player? I do have an HD tv but have never watched anything really HD on it.

Yes.
I do have an HD tv but have never watched anything really HD on it.
Why not?
Rick
Rich,
Oh, yes! I have the original Black Diamond DVD, and Part-II and Part-III, all DVD's. I will be watching Part-II again tonight.
I have an early Blu-Ray player, but don't like the way the videos are accessed or the menus; at least for the dozen or so Blu-Ray's I have (part of my 634-title collection of DVDs). The Blu-Ray quality is good, but I really cannot tell a lot of difference even though I do have a 60" LED HI-DEF Samsung TV, so I have refrained from the Blu-Ray. But based on what you said regarding their capacity, and what David said about the prices of the players, I will be looking at a new player.
Thx!
Alex
Hey Alex,
The difference between DVD and Blu-Ray played from your Blu-ray player on your HD TV should be very noticeable. I guess it could be your Blu-ray player since its older. What kind of cable are you using between your Blu-Ray player and the TV? If your using the older analog cables (component video cables (red, blue, green)) that could be the problem. If you are using them, then try using a digital HDMI cable. Since the new Blu-ray players are cheap I would just buy a new one and use an HDMI cable. You should notice a big difference then.
Rich, I have all three of your videos. I believe only the 3rd DVD was also offered in Blue-Ray and when it was I choose the Blue-Ray version. With this new DVD coming out I will also choose the Blue-Ray version. I really like having the high quality picture. I do the same thing with the OGR videos.
Alex, I agree with Rich. An HDMI cable is essential to get the HD video to your HD TV. I'm not sure about today but in the recent past places like Best Buy charged an arm and a leg for an HDMI cable. I got most of mine from www.mycablemart.com. Just a suggestion to shop around for a cable.
Parts 1,2,3 are the most comprehensive how-to videos I've seen, and I highly recommend them. Looking forward to what comes next.
Excited to hear about a 4th video, Rich. This is good news, as I have your three current videos on my home server and refer to them all the time regarding progress on my layout. My grandson is 5 and loves the Toy Trains on Tracks videos. He often assists in layout work. That's how they learn, right? Thanks for your dedication to this hobby.

My TV has one set of RGB inputs, and I use those for my VHS player. All the other inputs are HDMI and USB. The two DVD/Blu-Ray players I have use HDMI cables. I do need to try a newer player, though.
Speaking of which, as David said, the players can be bought for around $60-$80, but I read some reviews where the higher rated players were over $300, and these have 3D and wifi capabilities. I have not cared that much for the 3D, even though my TV shows it rather well, but the wifi may be nice even though I have internet available at the entertainment center.
Thx!
Alex
