Can't wait to see the duct work.
I need the yellow color in spray paint form to match the rocket cover shell

Here's someone that makes it in spray cans.

Given the fading that happens fairly quickly in the real world, anything close should be pretty prototypical.
$47 for 1 $64.77 for 2 spray cans
Uhh... I didn't see the Batch Production Fee charge! Maybe not the ideal place to buy that paint!

Pretty close to the prototype, they look great!
How do you paint something like those hoses? I'm wondering how well paint will stick to the material.
Ok thanks.
I can 3D design and print.... but I admit that I can't paint worth S$%T !
I don't have the patience and hate airbrushing.
Sadly Alan, painting is my nemesis as well, if it doesn't come in a rattle can, I'm lost!
John
maybe someone kind will offer to paint them for us.
I'm checking around for a painter that can paint them, I know it shouldn't be me!

I think we can get them painted, did you ever get your printer sorted out after it crapped out?
yes new printer is working fine.
Did you ever make any progress on this project?
They're done but unpainted.
I have several sets printed of the 7 pieces as shown above: the AC unit; the support frame with propane tank; the 4 flexible connecting hoses; and the car hose connection.
I just do not have packaging design or cut yet.
Not sure if the tossing them in a box with peanuts will survive.
I guess they're more fragile than they look.

Alan, did you ever complete some of these? My rockets are still overheating.
Painting the Union Pacific Rocket Booster A/C Units
I have agreed to help Alan and John with painting their a/c units for their rocket booster cars. This is my way of paying back to Alan and John for the help they provided me during my UP 2066 project build.
I have received the 3D printed parts from Alan earlier this week, and as always, these came to me in one of Alans' custom laser cut boxes w/ the inserts. He also sent me one of his swivel platforms off one of his cars, so I could ensure that the units fit the cars properly prior to painting and to also ensure a proper color match.
I have started to clean up the parts and now have 4 completed. The frame on the right is cleaned, and the a/c unit on the left still has all the sprags from the printing and has yet to be cleaned.
Please follow along during this painting process....Until next time....

This is very cool beans, my sensitive electronics and rocket motor cars will have climate control!
John
I could not get the scale A/C units to actually "cool" the rocket cars very well.
In warm weather, you will need to use your house A/C to cool the cars.

Alan, that's really disappointing! I figured with a good 3D printer, any A/C unit would actually be a fully functional piece! I can see if I tried to print them with my cheap Creality printer there might be problems...
I'll install them anyway, I couldn't get the rocket to fly when I assembled it either.

You guys are missing the whole point, the small AC units are cooling. They’re just cooling very small……lol.
Hey,
Wasn't I supposed to be painting these for you guys. Last email I got from you guys says they were in production...but that was a while ago. Happy to still help out but it seems like you have it covered now. Any way I'd still like to get 4-5 of these as we previously discussed.
Bill
Wonderful example of what 3-D printing, and dedicated hobbyists can do for the hobby. Thanks for sharing......Wish I had the Rocket set!
Mike
@AlanRail those are amazing. It looks like you printed those on a resin printer, have you tried a standard FDM printer? I don't know that it would have the same level of detail. If this is a model you planned to make available to the community for those who want to DIY, I'd be happy to test it out.
It's hard to believe that they'd be that detail, but it would be interesting to try a test print at maximum resolution of a decent FTM printer and see what you get.
Just a quicky update...I have the back side of the a/c units painted in gray like the prototypes after taping off the fronts.
I have the front sides partially taped off the the white. I sprayed one of the units with the Testors white spray paint and it was like spraying mud verses using the TCP paints and an airbrush. So I removed the white paint with acetone and retaped it. I'm going to pick up some flat white and flat black later today from a hobby shop that I didn't know was near by.
Until next time....

I'm sure glad I didn't even think of trying to paint these with my limited rattle can skills!
WOW, those look really good! That will mark a major improvement for my booster train, that's the missing link for a truly prototypical looking train!
Impressive work!
Mike
Thank you John and Mike! Thanks for the likes too!
They're a mixture of airbrushed and hand painted. The "Carrier" was the hardest.

I guess so, that's tiny I suspect! I didn't expect to actually be able to read it, I figured it would just be a blue badge.

Quickie update...
I have the frames completed. Propane tanks are painted silver. The frames are UP Armour Yellow w/ a matte clear over the top.
With the AC unit slid into position. These will get glued together and touched up. I should be returning theses back to Alan sometime next week.
Until next time....Stay warm my friends. It's bitter cold here in west central Ohio.

That looks really great, pretty darned close to the prototype paint scheme!
