On Valentine's Day my wife and I rode the Romance on the Rails excursion put on by the Niles Canyon Railway (NCR) in Niles Canyon, CA.  The train ride was from the Sunol Depot to the town of Niles and back.  It featured wine tasting from wineries in the Livermore Valley.  The train was pulled by the Southern Pacific #1423. But the showcase was the SP #10040 Parlor Car.  This was originally built as a heavyweight dining car in 1927.  It served mostly on SP's California and Oregon Line.  After it was retired, it was an SP MoW crew car.  It was bought by the NCR in the 1970's.  It was in such bad shape that it took about 30 years to restore it to its 1920's elegance...including the mahogany paneling.  It was a trip back to the past and a wonderful day.Valentine's Day 2016 #11Valentine's Day 2016 #21Valentine's Day 2016 #9Valentine's Day 2016 #13Valentine's Day 2016 #23Valentine's Day 2016 #8Valentine's Day 2016 #10Valentine's Day 2016 #12Valentine's Day 2016 #24Valentine's Day 2016 #25Valentine's Day 2016 #22

Ed,

Great stuff, my wife and I ride the rails out of Wellsboro, Pa in the same manner, we missed the Valentines Day ride this year however.  You & your Beautiful wife looked fantastic on the Train Ride!  Next time ED, some Sheri's Berry's delivered to her right at Train Time or just before!  The benefits are incredible!

All the best,

PCRR/Dave

Ed:

From one Ed to another nice photos and a great way to honor the Mrs. on Valentine's Day. Each year in mid-September in honor of our wedding anniversary I take my wife on a drive up to Saratoga Springs, NY to ride the Saratoga and North Creek Railroad. The railroad is a common carrier that actually picks up and leaves off passengers at 6 stations along the way. The ride each way is about 3 & 1/4 hours on the 50 mile ride each way to North Creek and return. The train leaves Saratoga Springs at 10:00am, arrives in North Creek at 12:15pm. It leaves North Creek at 3:45pm and returns to Saratoga Springs at 6:00pm. We have lunch in North Creek. The train consist of 2 1950s long distance coach cars and a full dome car with a GE Dash 7 diesel and a EMD E8 at each end push pull style. On the way home we drive to Herkimer, NY on the Erie Canal and takes to 90 minute boat ride on the canal and go though lock #18 on the canal both ways. The next day we drive to Howe Caverns and go down and take the tour. The last night out we stay at the Roxbury Motel in Roxbury, NY. Every room is decorated in a different theme and the breakfast buffet has so many things to choose from that one can't eat all of them. The entire trip takes 5 days and 4 nights. This year I am working on a possible different journey. Anybody interested in joining us this year?

Nice!  My wife & I are going to wedding in FL and thought about flying but the prices are crazy. Even to Atlanta is not much cheaper.

We thought about driving but it's two full days from here.  Then we heard our neighbor is taking the AutoTrain.  Still pretty expensive.  So we booked the Cresent to Atlanta at bargain rates.  Overnight on the train then a few hour drive from there to our destination.

My wife is very excited since she enjoyed our other train trips and is not really fond of flying.  So we're having a belated Valentine's Journey.
