I have Lionel & MTH engines that the rubber tires come off a lot even when the trains have very few cars. I have Williams engines that do not and I can run 50 car train and the tires on Williams still don't come off. So the question I have is, how come the Williams tires never come off, but Lionel & MTH does?

Try a little instant super glue, with caution.
But have not had any problems with Lionel or MTH tires coming off??
Or look at trying;
Increase the Pulling Power of Your Engines
Got a loco that can't get a grip? Bullfrog Snot provides a quick and easy way to improve the pulling power of HO, N or Z Scale engines - without taking them apart! Simply power up your loco so the wheels spin slowly and apply a light coat to the wheel/s on the geared axle. Allow it to cure (Bullfrog Snot dries at room temperature), and prepare to be amazed the next time you run your model! Great for engines that didn't come with traction tires, it can also be used to replace old, dried-out or missing tires on your motive power too. Bullfrog Snot comes in a handy one-ounce jar, and is ready to use.

I have heard of Bullfrog Snot, but have never used it.
Have used rubber cement with an MTH engine and it didn't help. Had to replace the traction tires.
A little tip about traction tires; when they come loose, replace it! At least with MTH traction tires.

Why Williams traction tires stay on and Lionel & MTH don't stay on can only be quality or lack of quality with Lionel & MTH tires. One thing that I have seen is that the Williams tires fit closer to the wheel rim.
Also why does Williams use metal gears and no other company use all metal gears?

I used bullfrog snot on a large diecast engine that did not have traction tire grooves.
It improved the pulling power but not nearly as good as traction tires in my opinion.
It is time consuming as well. The wheels must be slowly rotated and it is not easy to get a smooth surface across the wheel. Several layers should be applied also.
I do not know how long the bullfrog snot will hold up when actually pulling trains.
Usually when your traction tires start coming off its because the rubber has become dried out/stretched out and it time for replacement.
BTW, I have noticed that Atlas O diesels use a much thicker tire with a much deeper groove in the metal wheel. Only Atlas O tires will fit in those wheels.
did a search for "traction tires" and found much more talk on tires.

Replace a tire with a tire, nothing else. Many people install and stretch tires like rubber bands. They keep the shape you stretch them to. Carefully roll replacement tires on your wheel being careful not to stretch them. If you are careful in doing this, your tire will not come off unless it gets old and tired.
Everyone uses metal gears. You might see some cheap Lionel sets with plastic gears from time to time. Everyone has metal gears.
