My youngest son gave me a scale test car for Father's Day last weekend.  I've been pondering how to scratch build a railroad platform scale and incorporate it into my layout so I can display the scale test car in it's "native environment".

I've run Forum and internet searches and couldn't find any topics or articles concerning railroad platform scales.   I guess I should probably have posted this on the 3RS forum but, I suspect it will be seen by more people here - hopefully someone who can assist.

I'm familiar with rail platform scales from my "day job" and have been formulating an idea in my mind how to build one.  Since this Forum is home to some great model railroaders, I would also be interested to know if anyone on here has ever scratch built a scale for their own layout and would be willing to share plans or ideas.

Thanks Ted!  These photos are helpful!  I had pulled a photo of a Mettler platform track scale off their website and had kind of been basing my planning around that but; your photos offer a lot more ideas.

The platform scales in our plants are dual use; i.e. configured so you can weigh either a tank truck or a tank car. On this type, the rails are embedded in the scale platform.  I’ve also seen platform scales where the rails rest on top of the scale platform.  On this latter type, you can only weigh railcars.

For my purposes, I’ll likely go with the railcar only option as that seems more logical for the location I’ve chosen to install it.
