Imo. It smells bad.
I tried unscented and had a visitor to see the layout. The first thing he said was "that smoke stinks".
I'd pick a scented fluid instead.
I find the vanilla and pine scents the most pleasing without being too strong.
In the end it's all a matter of personal taste....er...um...smell.
Been using it for quite some time. It stinks, they all stink.
Does Lionel sell Diesel scented fluid?
I like Christmas by MTH or pine by Lionel. I might also go for cedar, but have not found or tried it yet. Don't know if there is a diesel scernted smoke fluid.

I used Cedar under the tree this year and it had a nice smell. Next year, I'll try the pine.
Who made the cedar?
I have a bottle of "original cedar" from JT's Mega-steam. I like the way it smells...
Cedar sounds good. I’ll have to try that. It will make a change from diesel.
Thanks guys my wife goes crazy she hates it yesterday she was out and i ran some trains with jt mega steam apple cider thinking it was not to bad but she got home and that was that lol looks like no smoke for now thanks again my good friends

My layout is in the garage so when it gets really thick with smoke, my wife just stays away unless it starts to creep inside the house.
I stick to the basics... Hot chocolate, candy cane, Christmas pine... smell the best to me... but its all a matter of opinion.
Lionel Hot Chocolate is my favorite.

I have tried JT's Mega-steam NADA but even in brand new engines it has an awful chemical smell. The MTH Christmas scent is ok but not great. I have been thinking about trying JT's orange or lemon, as I like citrus smells. Has anyone on here tried these?
The cinnamon one is not good and the apple cider bad also
I use JT'S Mega-Steam NADA unscented Smoke Fluid. I still have to turn the ceiling fan on and open the door before the wife comes home.
they all have a "scent" to it.. even tho the unscented isnt really "scented" . But i def. love the Vanilla !
I generally use baby oil. Long as you don't mind talcum powder smell, it works fine.
Unscented is horrible, I use Christmas tree scent.
I'll go get the Christmas tree pine since it gets good reviews from members
The NADA has always worked for me, and I have had no problems in my small bedroom with lingering odor. Since leaving O gauge, I currently only use the current iteration of LGB fluid made by Massoth of Germany, and it is also relatively odorless. It is well to keep in mind that our sense of smell, like our hearing, is HIGHLY subjective, thus the varying opinions on both smoke fluid odors and sound systems. Whatever you prefer and works for YOU is best! :-)
I'm minded of when I was running a 2025 with Lionel Premium smoke fluid at the Gravette Days celebration a few years back. Someone came in, sniffed the air and said, cheerfully, "I smell Lionel!"

Mitch: GOOD ONE! LOL!
I just love the smell of Diesel in the morning!

Imagine what it must be like being a blood hound, that can smell a squirrel taking a p----from a mile away!
LOL
I thought the Cedar scent was a nod to American Flyer's iconic smoke oil of the 50's. At least that's what came to my 'oilfactory' recollections... Anyway, I like many of JT's concoctions. But only on someone else's layout/home/display. Choo-choo smoke: Fun to see....not nice to put up with/breathe in an enclosed home/basement.
But that's just MHO, of course. TEHO.

Jts Mayberry is awesome. Makes everything smell nice. Wife loves it.
Now if we could combine hot grease, oily steam and a hint of soft coal smoke scent, I'd be happy camper.
And how about creosote scented ties that smell like a hot August afternoon in the yard. mmm mmm mmm !
It is amazing how scent can trigger memory. I fired up my old 2020 locomotive from my youth and after a lap about the track it started to smoke with just the residual smoke pellet residue in it. I was immediately transported back to the basement of my childhood home with a 12yr old me running trains.... :-)
Or you could just add your own fragrant oil like they do for candle making. A few drops is all you need. Then you can have pretty much any fragrance your smeller likes. Sometimes you can find them locally.

I have used the orange scent in my Tropicana refer and like the nice orange scent it has.
I used Megasteam's Nada as an unscented smoke fluid, but found their eliminator to be closer to an unnoticeable scent. It basically has a clean scent, and is also designed to clean the smoke units.
I like the vanilla. I used the coal smoke scent once! Lord, what was I thinking?

Cranberry Woods 👍🏼
The smell of MTH pipe scent is something used here in house not over the top but just right tried others like JT's Christmas scents and to us they have a nasty chemical smell but others i have read say it is good we are all different.
Don't not I repeat do not try the Lionel premium wood stove. It stinks up the room in the bottle with the lid closed. Inside a plastic bag!!!!
I don't think that any fluid is truly unscented. Even the "plain" fluid emits an odor as it's vaporized in the smoke unit.
Most are pretty unpleasant. The plain Lionel premium works great but the smell gives me a headache with excessive use.
Their scented versions are good with the Hot Chocolate seeming to give off the most odor (but pleasant).
The pine smells more like pine-sol cleanser rather than the normal pine oil used in Christmas sprays.
The sugar cookie smelled very good but the fluid seemed thicker which concerned me that it might gum up the smoke unit.
I think the best smoke fluid should stink to high heaven and cause us to cough and choke, like a real train! LOL, just kidding.

I love the smell of trains...model and real.
