I can't say enough how disappointed I am with MTH cancelling the red 263E and matching 2600 series cars. I heard this had a lot of orders.  Be this as it may, I really want one of these sets, so repainting seems the only option. (I once saw a very  early Mike's Train House set painted in the same red scheme at York about 10 years ago, but never since.) First, does anyone know of a good painter who could do the job (engine & 4 cars) for around $400.00? What is the difference in 2600, 2601 and 2602 series and the 600, 601 and 602 series red passenger cars? What is the difference between a 263E and 260E? Do you think a 264E would look better on the point?

Thanks!

Thanks for the reply. "Red Comet" is actually a misnomer. I am familiar with the Lionel and MTH remakes of the set with the 264e and smaller cars. I am referring to essentially the two tone red Blue Comet set in the last Lionel Corporation catalog. MTH called it a Red Comet. I thought about the true Red Comet but ever since I saw that set years ago its always been on my wish list.

2600, 2601, 2602 car are the same as the 600, 601, 602 cars but with automatic couplers. They are somewhat between the smaller 603 cars and the larger 613 cars (or 2613). They have a single piece stamped roof, with latches, compared to the two piece roof used on the 2613 cars or the screw on roofs of the 603's

The baby blue comet used a two tone blue 263E. If you take a look at the 260E side by side with the 263E, you will notice differences in the trim, boiler front, frame, etc. Most 260's do not have a reverse lever through the boiler (grey ones do, I think). At a glance, beside color, they do look similar but are not the same.

I keep wishing and hoping for MTH to go forward and make the red comet they featured in the 2014 catalog.  It's a great looking engine, and makes a really nice set when coupled with the passenger cars.

Come-on MTH.  You tantalized us with the catalog, then pulled the rug out from those of us who really wanted this set.
