I got a great deal on a 746 that showed some promise with some much needed TLC. I took her all apart, cleaned, lubed, and serviced her. The only thing I was short was the darn expensive L19 bulb. I put her on the track before replacing the shell to perform a test run around the track, but my main line was occupied by my 2500 series set. No problem, I'll just couple them up and take them for a spin. Well, she tried and tried to pull the set, but just kept spinning her wheels.

I can't believe one of Lionel's premium locomotives wouldn't be able to pull the 2500 series set. Okay, it's been a while since the 2500 series set has been in for service, so I clean the wheels and apply a drop of oil on the axles. I get everything ready for the test run, and still, she slips like crazy! How maddening. Next, I spend way to much time meticulously cleaning the track on the main line. Still slippage!

I think of all the things you guys would recommend here:

*Check/replace traction tires (Not applicable)

*Magnetraction - using tubular - seems strong

*Service Motor - well, I just did

*Add weights

And then it dawned on me - the HEAVY shell was not on!

I put the shell on and now she overcame the challenge of the 2500 series set!

Not as "entertaining" as your exercise (really, really funny - and completely understandable), but just yesterday I got an old-ish MTH SD9 out of the box. Trying

to decide whether or not to sell it. Took a photo or two.

I got it years ago as a PS1 basket case (previous-owner-caused), and had Weaver convert it to Train America TMCC, as I had not yet started doing that myself.

Put it on the track and could not get it to answer any number on the cab, combinations

thereof, or 1. Try same numbers again (a bad mental sign). I began to fear that it was broken. More number tries...then, the Voice of Reason spoke: just re-program a number into it, you idiot.

I did. It ran. Well. I'm keeping it. It's number 14, like on the cab. (I had tried 14, and

I do believe that the radio board "lost" the number while in boxed storage for years,

but I dunno.)

Here's one.  Did some service on a loco.  Put it on the track, fired up the transformer ------ nothing.  Took the engine apart, again checked everything on the bench, worked perfectly.  Put it back together, fired up the transformer again ------- nothing.  Was about to begin to throw things, when I spotted the lock-on ------- disconnected.  How it happened, well train gremlins is all I could think of.  Reconnected the lock-on, everything worked fine.  But, half a day had gone by, and I really, really felt stupid.  So stupid, in fact that this is the first time i ever mentioned it to anyone.  True story.  Bob S.
