Speaker wire

With my very limited knowledge of the internal workings, I keep my shell off repair time at a very minimum. I am replacing the speaker in a diesel unit, and have always noticed the speaker wire leads are always braided around each other. I am sure this service a purpose, can someone tell me why, other than it might keep things nice and tidy for routing purposes.
