Greetings,
I was at the North Carolina Transportation Museum in Spencer and was wondering what these two pieces of equipment are called and what there purpose is.
Thanks,
Eric

Looks like a 90" wheel lathe to me. Designed to turn steam locomotive drive wheel sets up to 90" in diameter.
The one on the left appears to be small steam engine, not a locomotive, but a small engine to run some sort of equipment. It looks like a vertical boiler with a small piston/cylinder that is turing a small gear that in turn is turning a large geared wheel.
It is a wheel lathe, as HW said.
The Wheel lathe appears to be the larger thing to the right and farther back in the photo. The smaller thing on the left and closer to the photographer appears to be a vertical boiler.

Yep! That is a stationery steam engine or donkey.
Wouldn't it be nice if the original poster returned and commented on if his/her question was answered?????
I deeply apologize for my absence, I have been out of town.
Seriously, thanks for the information. I guessed that the one on the right was a lathe, it was nice to get confirmation. I do wonder where the vertical boiler was used. Here is a better picture.

No worries. It wasn't that big of a deal.
I would say that vertical boiler is driving some type of winch mechanism. I don't know the exact purpose but to hazard a guess I would say it would be to drag harvested trees closer to logging railroad.
I'm not sure that thing is a vertical boiler. Looks more like a tank.
