I have talked about in the past how I like my trains to be staged on shelves rather than under the layout. I have an upper (holds 2 trains with room for static displays in front) and lower  (holds 4 trains) staging shelf for this.  I like that I can see them on display when not running them and they jump out at you when entering the room.  Most visitors think these are only display shelves and don’t pick up on that they are connected to the layout.

The shelve staging areas is shown on the track diagram below on the right.  Not really a practical area to have the layout go into.  It also blends into the rest of the shelves above them used for trains not on the layout.

When coming up from the lower shelf, the constraints of the room made the grade steep so the engineer needs to keep the speed up.

I have not done anything on the layout recently, but was having some fun this morning and took some videos of it.

Good idea!

I've always wanted to make a rotary storage system where the cars sit in a cylinder, like that on a revolver.  Pull the "trigger" and BAM!!! your train is ready to go.

A 6-shot cylinder wouldn't be that big of a diameter I don't believe and you could make it long enough to hold 6 cars in each spot for a total of 36 cars.  Of course each spot would have to be on a pivot or hanger so the cars would remain wheels down at all time.

Thanks all for the nice comments.   The shelve staging areas is one of my favorite things on my layout.

The lower area ramp just off the shelves has access from underneath and the 4 way Ross switch has plug connectors so it can removed somewhat easily for service.

Tom, that signal bridge (along with the rest of my signals) was quite the adventure and effort over the last several years.  Thanks for noticing!

Mike
