Steam cleaning engine room

I was reading a old manual I have it says the engine room of the diesel locomotive should be steam cleaned periodically. It gives no further instructions, but why would want spray water were there is generators, fuel pump, and other electrical equipment.

Grease prevents heat transfer on surfaces, a prime cause of mechanical failures, as well as being combustable.
