why so my mth proto 2 steamer run jerky on speed 1 and 2 smph and nice an smooth at 3 smph and higher.

Because it's specified by MTH to run smoothly at 5 SMPH or higher. It's perfectly fine.
Ironlake, what loco is this (what's the product number?) Did you do a basic check to make sure nothing is binding in the running gear? Speed control helps a lot, but it's not a substitute for a properly designed and adjusted mechanism.
MTH claims three SMPH in their catalog print (and this is probably to set customer expectations at that level to reduce the number of warranty returns.) Some locos, when properly adjusted and broken in, are smooth at 2 or even 1 SMPH. Depending on which loco you have, a disassembly and careful going-over will help reduce jerking or lurching at very slow speeds. Let us know what you find out. -Ted
Ted,
MTH claims three SMPH in their catalog print
Not exactly.
Just to be clear, MTH has, at various times and in various documentation, stated that their DCS engines are smooth at speeds of 3 SMPH or 5 SMPH. Since the OP didn't specify the engine under discussion, the more conservative statement is appropriate. Further, his engine is PS2 (several years old at a minimum) so any recent catalog statement would not apply.
Regardless, since his engine operates smoothly at 3 SMPH, it's absolutely within specifications and there is no problem to solve.
Clean track and well oiled pickup rollers help to run smoother at very low speeds. Be sure the oil flows completely through the roller.
Barry, these posts with lack of information are getting old. I would be very happy if all my engines came on smooth at 3 MPH. Dave, if people would follow what you outlined, they will do well.
