Steam Railroading in Manhattan

Interesting piece of history. The last of the 11th ave cowboys actually happened in 1941, the high line I believe was done in sections and thus the last street level running happened much later. http://www.thehighline.org/blo...boys-of-death-avenue

And yep, the southern terminus was the New St John Terminal, the Hudson Terminal was where the WTC site is, it was raised when they built the original WTC and was the center of the old Hudson market that Hunts Point in the Bronx replaces.

Thank you Peter, great video. Loved seeing those Canadian National outside braced boxcars on the streets of NYC (been waiting for Atlas to produce those) video stopped just short of a Canadian Pacific boxcar coming into view. Too bad the other rolling stock early on in the video went by too fast to recognize the road names. I've searched for a for a book with quality photos of the early West Side line but have had no luck, one such book may not exist.

Ya know, I got blasted once on another forum when I mentioned the NYC needing to have riders on horseback preceeding street running trains!    Too bad I can't go back and show them this!    Thanks for posting!  I love this kinda stuff!

Found this interesting snow scene of the 60th St Yards on the west side of Manhattan.

City street lights, even stop lights, blink a bright red and green.  It's Christmas time, in the city...

Below 61th Street the tracks ran under the city streets to 34th St where the approach to the high line began. The tracks entered the tunnel at 61st Street and could occasionally be seen between the city blocks.
