After some discussion about the Carnegie Science Center Submarine Car appearing in the new Lionel Fall 2013 catalog, I thought I would share with you my idea of what said car should really have looked like. The car is Lionel's Navy Flatcar w/ Ertl Helicopter #16952. The submarine is the 1/700 scale USS Balao SS-285 #37311, from the MRC Sea Power series. Granted, the USS Requin is the later Tench Class sub, but as a fund raiser, I think this would have been a better representation rather than the old Lionel sub model.

With today's technology an even better idea would be to use a Borden's Milk type flat car with the sub resting in a blue ocean (like the Lionel Tug Boats) and then covered by a clear Borden's Milk like cover. Different subs from museums around the country could be made with the name and stats printed on the clear cover where not to obstruct the view of the submarine.

Agreed breezinup.

Scale is more than a bit off, the Lionel 1:700 at least fills the car.

Want to be more impressive?

Get a model at least double that size and put it on one of those heavy lift flatcars with the extra trucks at each end. Sorry I cant recall the name, I model steam...

I'd Use a GATO class sub myself, Similar in appearance to the Tench class but older I suspect.

(I have a RC 30" Gato that actually submerges and surfaces [pumps can run the ballast tanks dry, sucks air thru the periscope].)

One would think that if you knew enough to own an RC Gato, you would have known that the Balao class is the "thick skinned" later version, coming between the Gato and Tench class boats.
