I never tire of watching these videos of steam power in action on the East Coast. Commuter engines made the East Coast flourish. I had no idea that the C&O's monstrous 2-6-6-6 articulateds out-spec'd the Big Boys. Enjoy these videos.

Amen, very impressive.
Those were both great youtube videos ! Nice to see some better quality images, and even some decent color clips. I have 2 of the 2-6-6-6 Allegheny's one by MTH and other by 3rd Rail Sunset. Saw the one on display at the B & O RR museum for the first time in the late 1990's.... Once MTH introduced it, I was hooked. Thanks for posting
I like watching train videos especially of the steam era. The NYC heavyweight mail trains were great.
Cool, thanks for these. The 2-6-6-6 as a high-speed freight loco - equivalent to SIX FTs?!! Wow, now I am interested in acquiring one!
C&O 2-6-6-6: If there's an uglier articulated steam locomotive out there, I've never seen it.
Love the footage. Nice find! Thanks.
I saw the 1604 at the Ford museum. I didn’t know much about the engine and did some research on the Allegheny’s after I got back home. A very impressive locomotive.

Interesting that the big C&O engine was still running as late as 1955 (based on the parked '55 Chevy).
The C&O dvd is well worth purchasing; very informative and lots of great scenes.

Seriously, can a locomotive be more ill-proportioned? With that single pilot wheel in front, and everything else squished in back under the smoke box, it looks like it has an overbite. And everything stretched out in back makes it look like it wants to tilt backwards. Blech.
I'm by no means a UP fan, but I'll take Challengers and Big Boys any day over an Allegheny.
Great videos!!!
Uglier than the 2-6-6-6? Let's see: Almost every Pennsy steam loco. Every European steam loco. Anything with a Wooten firebox. Most geared steam locos.
Gimme the Allegheny any day!
Is there anybody I haven't offended yet?
No steam engines are ugly! Some, like the C&O's 2-6-6-6, are more brutish than others. For example, the Berks with coffin feed-water heaters are more brutish than the 2-6-6-6.
The New York Central's J3 Super Hudson is brutish in comparison to the beautiful J1 Hudson.
Thanks for sharing. I have added them to my favorites.
Hey! Whose calling who ugly!

Hey, whose calling whom ugly!!
I've got great lines (some earned from wear and tear) and I'm not ill proportioned (I may be a bit round in some places though) and I'm not squished in the back under my smoke box (its just fine and works better than most at this age) and I do not have an overbite either!! You guys need stronger glasses as the trifocals you have are clearly not helping you. Below is my profile, see how shapely I am!

Just goes to show you, some people have no taste whatsoever. 😁
