It's #SwitcherSaturday time!!!!

Lots of us out there love switchers (shifters, docksiders, yard goats, critters, etc., so lets keep #SwitcherSaturday (a.k.a. SWSAT) rolling!

If you missed last week's SWSAT you should really go take a look, it was a ton of fun!

This week at the Murnane house...

NYC #1665 (an 0-4-0 steam switcher with slope backed tender) is shifting all kinds of things around the yard.

I even tried another "Prisma" picture, came out "interesting" but not great.

Also...
Last weekend I was doing some poking around researching the Hoosac Tunnel & Western Railroad and I found these pictures of a 2-6-0 steamer with a slope-backed tender.
I was suprised when I saw these, and after googling around a bit, it does seem unlikely or uncommon that a 2-6-0 (Mogul?) would have one of these.  Continued searching and I could only find other references/pictures of examples where this type of tender on 2-6-0's were temporary setups.
The pictures come from https://sites.google.com/site/newenglandshortlines/ - it was a fun little research project for sure!

I hope everyone has a nice weekend and gets a chance to post some switcher stuff here!

All the best...Rich Murnane

p.s. Miss the post on Saturday? NO BIG DEAL, just keep posting pictures of your favorites until the next #SwitcherSaturday

p.s.s.  I'll be offline most of the morning, kid stuff - so "see" you later today!

Yay SWSat is On!

I posted a pic of a mogul last week with a slope back tender last week Rich. It was at the Patterson Museum was built at the Patterson Locomotive Works and had served the Pananma Canal Railroad.

On smaller and short lines without turning facilities and a lot of reverse running the ability to see clearly was a real asset I'm sure.

Here is a Kline  Plymouth in Ford paint ( I know Oxymoron) stopped at the yard office.

Great pictures everyone. Happy Switcher Saturday everyone.

Rich, that yard is getting mighty crowded. probably time to increase those switching fees.

Andy/Silver Lake, Nice little Plymouth switcher.

Soo Nut, Nice switcher and detailed layout.

My contribution is my latest switcher, #227 going through final inspections by roundhouse foreman Andre "The Giant." The locomotive just need marker lights to be hung and then it will be released.

Here we have a New York Central RS-3 from K-Line. When MDK introduced its model of this unit, we decided on the Central version as the RS-3 was the predominant diesel type used by the road in and around the New York City area. They worked out of Harmon, North White Plains and the various yards around the city in pretty much any role to which they could be assigned. In fact, there are many well known photos of them working passenger and freight trains on the Putnam Division.

Neat pictures being shared. This is an old photo but one that I like and thought I’d share again. Some day soon I hope to post a photo of my new Southern Pacific 0-6-0 passenger car switcher. This new locomotive is a 3rd Rail model. I’ve already paid for it but don’t yet have it as I chose to drive down to their office to pick it up. I want to see all the other neat locomotives that 3rd Rail has produced. So, maybe in the next month I’ll be able to post something new on my layout.

Was at the Amherst Railway Society Big Railroad Hobby Show in West Springfield, Massachusetts on Saturday. Had a great time! The most impressive part of the day was an operating two-foot narrow gauge 0-4-0 steam switcher #11. I believe this steamer had been at the Edaville Railroad in South Carver, Massachusetts but now has been returned to Maine. It is in like-new condition evidently having been restored. The whistle was ear-shattering. This is a very early locomotive. It has slide valves to admit the non-superheated steam to the cylinders. “Modern” steamers were superheated and had piston valves for steam admission. They were filming the locomotive for an advertisement for next year’s Amherst Show, which will be the 50th.

Happy SWSAT! Not much switching today but a busy day on the layout. Set up the all the wiring for the lighting on the layout. Set up my Lionel control tower and passenger station, and my MTH Elevated Gate tower.

Cleaned and greased my latest purchase- a K-line B&O Chessie S-2. Ran trains for about an hour. More photos next week.

Great posts everyone!

Awesome posts this week all, thanks for another fun Switcher Saturday!

Anyone want to suggest a topic or theme for next week?  Also, February 18th's Switcher Saturday will be our annual "anniversary" post (2 years of Switcher Saturday posts, our first one was here), so it'd be fun to do something special for that day, perhaps post your favorite picture or comment about your favorite memory or favorite week or something?  You've got a few weeks to think that one through and "get ready"!

Have a great Sunday and a great week ahead, "see" you next week...Rich

Rich, Thanks so much for giving us a home to post our "switcher fixes" for the week. Looking back to your original post, I was glad to see I was one of the ones who had responded!

One possible idea for February 18th:

  • maybe suggesting that the posts be tied "loosely" to something railroad related happening anytime in February or mentioning some historic event that is tied to a real or fake railroad you like or model, like:

Today in History - February 28 | Library of Congress

If someone follows the B&O, did you know that the B & O Railroad...

On February 28, 1827, the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad became the first U.S. railway chartered for the commercial transportation of freight and passengers. Investors hoped that a railroad would allow Baltimore, the second largest U.S. city at that time, to successfully compete with New York for western trade. New Yorkers were profiting from easy access to the Midwest via the Erie Canal.

Just an idea, maybe others have better.

Also, April 1 seems to land on a Saturday. If you want the day off, I would not mind starting up the thread and you can take the day off, if you would like. Either way, just let me know.

I saw Andy/Silver Lake and his daughter at the White Plains Toy & Train Show on Sunday, Jan. 29. Nice to finally meet Andy in person and what a well behaved young lady his daughter is.

One of the vendors had a good selection of vintage New York City subway signs and I was able to pick up this porcelain one that is around 10 inches long and around 5 inches tall.

Tom. Really great to meet you and shake the hand of a real friend I've meet through this weekly post. Thank you for the compliments. My daughter had a great time and she got some vintage Fisher Price circus animals for her "collection". I guess they could go on a circus train. image

I have been pouring over that track diagram booklet. It is very helpful with orientation of photos I have. That Pennsy sign you picked up is really great. I wonder which subway line platform it was on.

I picked up a new little engine that will make an appearance here next Saturday. I wasn't looking for one it just found me and the price was right.

Andy, It was nice meeting you and your daughter. Glad that you both found something to take home. I showed a picture of my sign to my friend Joe Frank who does some amazing work in terms of modeling the New York City transit system. This is what he said:

"So the Sign was an add on to the already existing IRT W. 34th St. signs -- so it had to be at least after 1910 or so -- re:  your PENN.  sign."

The Put track diagram book was put together by my wife, copied from the original New York Central Electric Zone and Putnam Division Diagrams. I had purchased them years ago from Fred Arone's Depot Attic in Dobbs Ferry, NY.  We sold out of all of the old copies, yesterday. In the Summer, I'll try to make new sets. They are very popular.

Tom
