It's #SwitcherSaturday time!!!!

Lots of us out there love switchers (shifters, docksiders, yard goats, critters, etc.), so lets keep #SwitcherSaturday (a.k.a. SWSAT) rolling!

If you missed last week's SWSAT you should really go take a look, it was a ton of fun!
https://ogrforum.com/...saturday-2018-jan-27

This week at the Murnane house.... Well.... I'm going to circle back in a little bit with a post,
I actually slept a little bit later than normal, which is unusal for me (I'm usually up around 5AM, not today for some reason).

If you get a chance - please post some switcher stuff here!

Reminder: The February 24th edition of SWSAT will be our 3 year anniversary, I'm hoping everyone can do something special that week, some sort of "look back" at the last three years of fun.
So please start thinking about some of your favorite SWSAT memories, pictures, and videos and note them down for posting that week.

All the best...Rich Murnane

p.s. Miss the post on Saturday? NO BIG DEAL, just keep posting pictures of your favorites until the next #SwitcherSaturday

Hi Guys,

I've had a chance to have a cup of coffee, walk the dog, and take a few pictures, all is good at the Murnane home here in Virginia.

This week I read a nice article in the January edition of that other magazine (hint: CTT) written by Robert Remley, titled "1947 - The Year Without a Switcher".  Mr. Remley walks the reader through what Lionel was doing with switchers before and after the war, and tells us how the Lionel 0-4-0 #1665 switcher (based on the pre-war #1662) had trouble getting through their newer O Gauge switches and how Lionel responded (a couple years later) with the #1656 0-4-0.  The #1656 had slightly larger drive wheels and different gearing, and was advertised as very much switch/turnout friendly.  If you get a chance I'd recommend grabbing a copy of the magazine and taking a peek!

I have three recent renditions of these little critters in my roster, all of which you regular SWSAT fans have seen many times over the past few years.

The first one I picked up was New York Central #1665 (6-18054), you can see tons of pictures of it here.

The second one on my roster was Chesapeake & Ohio #39 (6-28662), pictures here.

The third is a Christmas engine decorated with Angela Trotta Thomas art - #1991 (6-38692), pictures here.

The NYC #1665 has a plastic tender, no whistle, and no figures in the cab.  The other two have metal tenders, steam whistles, and cab figures, so they are a little bit more fun.  All three typically run slightly under $100 on the bay for used models, the C&O one seems to not be as common and might run as high as $150 used, and of course all three are conventionally controlled.  If anyone has converted one of these to some sort of command control, I'd love to hear how they did that.

All three of mine have spent lots of time running on track at the Murnane home, here are a couple pictures for you.

I hope everyone has a nice weekend, I was surprised this morning at the temperature here (only 9 degrees!), hopefully it warms up soon.

Best...Rich

Happy Switcher Saturday everyone.

Thanks for hosting us again this week, Rich. Wow! Coming up on 3 years.

This week I have a close-up of my prewar #231 and #230.

Looking good Tom, according to the article I mentioned, each of these prewar switchers were slightly different, you know any differences between the "stock" #231 & #230?  Besides the obvious boiler # of course?

Hey Arnold, that's a good looking Geep you got there, I think I found one online indicating it's a GP38-2.

I had just spotted the RF&P 40 footer next to the Fastback.

Yay! SWSat is in the “on” position!

As usual we look to be off to a good start. Nice pictures guys. This week I am posting a few Pictures from NYSME of 2rail O scale.

I have been progressing on my big refurbish project. Technically it is not a Switcher but without its pilot truck maybe it qualifies. It had a very thick paint scheme so I am blasting and repainting fixing and improving along the way. It will stay a green Ps4. Temporarily it is fun to see in Bronze, Brass and pewter.

Looking in the open smoke box reminds me of the shots Tom P posted last week of the line up of prewar0-6-0s. I have seen so many pictures of open smoke boxes tending to the boiler tubes.

Have a great weekend guys. I can’t wait to see what you all post.

Hey Andy, great pictures and great project you have going there!  I guess I'll need to pick up some RF&P items now I'm here in Fredericksburg!  Thanks as always for sharing, and I hope your feeling better...Rich

Edaville Railroad 0-4-0 #11 two-foot narrow gauge steamer was at the Amherst Railway Society’s Railroad Hobby Show in West Springfield, Massachusetts on January 27th and 28th. People were permitted to enter the cab and blow the ear-shattering whistle. Children started crying from the sudden whistle and adults were startled. This continued every few minutes during the two days of the show. When standing nearby, my ears hurt from the noise.

Hi Rich,

Yes, both were built only in 1939 and as far as differences...#231 had a higher coupler height, #230 had lower coupler height.

I would recommend this book for details on these (& the other prewar) locomotives. I like it so much, I have several of them.

I'm the first to support any RF&P purchases. I grew up in Alexandria VA and remember Potomac Yard when RF&P was still going strong.

There needs to be more offered. Of all O scale makers MTH has been really good at it. Over the years they have offered quite a bit but it is always hard to find because of low production numbers. Atlas has been OK offering some nice options of especially rolling stock. The car in the picture is an Atlas product. Lionel was abysmal with only a MPC era 7800 blue boxcar until only last year when they offered the scale Berk in RF&P color. That is their first Lionel Oscale RF&P engine offering ever. This year they are offering the American Flyer S Scale Berk in RF&P. For whatever reason they have not offered the Polar Express size o scale Berk in RF&P...yet.

I have a Polar Express engine waiting in my huge pile of projects to be repainted. I am surer Lionel will offer a Lionchief engine as soon as I paint one up.

Rich, it’s one of my favorite engines: very smooth and quiet running for a change, which makes it ideal for playing music CDs in the background., One of its unique features is that on the roof there is a fan in which the blades move when the engine is powered up.

Dennis- I think your gonna need more than Turtle Wax for that shell

Pretty neat piece. Especially the outside third rail pick ups.

Tom’s Troy, NY Railroad YouTube video inspired me to post this short video that I’m very excited about.

Check out this smokin’ Delaware & Hudson RS-11 switcher hauling coal through Troy, NY:

Now take a look at that video again and notice the yellow Victorian home. That home is in the Lansingurgh section of Troy, NY., where my wife (who is in O Scale) was brought up.

I find petite woman very attractive. They make me feel powerful. LOL, Arnold

Happy SWSat Everyone!

Normally an early poster but had a few things to do this morning. Just catching up now. Great posts again everyone.

I've been busy on the auction sites once again and have just received my latest addition to the fleet. I'm gonna either have to stop buying stuff or expand my layout soon. I can't fit anything else on the tracks.

The new member of the switcher fleet is a MTH 0-4-0 Docksider B&O # 97. The set has three very nice cars including the work caboose with a whistle.

My second Docksider to go along with # 99

And the cars are all really nice too. The set looks like it was hardly used at all.

Have a nice weekend and keep the switchers working!

Mine probably was /is a General models. It is supper heavy with that solid cast bronze boiler. The tender is aluminum and more a short haul freight style. Was thinking of doing the same engine in Central Locomotive Works kit form but I am not ready for that yet. Sadly the CLW kit I had was missing parts that I could not replicate with my current skill set. The tender was also the bigger long haul tender that I would have preferred. Oh well.

Yours looks nicely home made. It would be pretty easy to swap the power collector to a center roller set from the current outrigger. It looks like it would be better balanced with trailing and pilot trucks. Fun project.
