Here are my "tail ends" for today.

First, a Lionel lines #657 red body / Tuscan roof, made between 1934 -1942 (blackened journals would indicate the later part of that period) .  Pulled by a Lionel 204 locomotive, the last of the pre-war die cast locomotives, uncatalogued, and available 1940-1942.

Finally the much newer, Lionel (MPC), DRG #9077 made between 1976-1983 and uncatalogued 1984-1991.  Pulled by the DRG Alco PA #222 from the postwar era, available 1963-1964.

Happy Tail End Tuesday everyone, there’s so many Tales told here on this thread, it’s an education in itself. I love the tales that @trumpettrain describes about his men that work hard on his railroad, @Sitka, you are so correct, “Keep America Strong” , your cabooses are so neat in the night time scene, @Mark V. Spadaro, I love your bay window Frisco caboose, so cool, @MELGAR, I love that UP caboose and the beautiful diesel pulling your train. Nice photos, everyone! Here's a shot of of my UP Yellowstone Special's tail-end observation car next to a Santa Fe freight's EV caboose (or way car, as they were known on the Santa Fe).

Because the real Yellowstone Special was a night train and there wasn't much to "observe" outside or inside, since most of the passengers were asleep in their Pullmans, it didn't have an observation car. The UP just stuck a red marker light at the rear vestibule on the last Pullman. But an O scale observation car looks a little better at the end of the train. So, there you have it. 😉

A rider coach carried the markers for AT&SF mail trains 7 and 8.  Here is a GGD combine modified to get me as close as I am able.

Every reference photo I could find showed a weary looking car, and I appreciated that since most of my work looks weary.

Taking the night photo helped me notice how the Tomar marker leaks light on the fireman's side.  iPhones will enhance any light problem such as that.

The interior lighting is actually quite dim like I figured any riding AT&SF employee would prefer.  And the marker colors are the proper Santa Fe R-Y-Y.

THE CAR LOOKS GREAT, ROBERT!  You don't need to be modest.  Love those ATSF marker lights.



I had a thrilling high speed ride on the rear end of No.3, the southern Mail & Express, through a rainstorm, from Clovis to Belen, in 1967.  They were so unaccustomed to seeing a paying passenger, that the Conductor did not bother collecting my ticket.  He probably did not want to do the paper work for the Accounting Department for one passenger.

THE CAT IS BACK!!  In the latest issue of "Trains" magazine is a report that CSX Transportation has released its first three "heritage" units.  On Jun 10 they released the one for the Chessie System, a GE/ Wabtec ES44AC, number 1973, and there on her side is the Chessie Cat!.  So to honor that heritage, here is one of my Chessie Cat "tail ends" for today.  The Lionel (MPC) # 9381 Chessie System caboose being pulled by the Lionel #8008 4-4-2 dark blue die cast Atlantic locomotive...both from 1980.

Here's an EV Tailend Lionel issued to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Statue of Liberty, her restoration and re-dedication:

This caboose was part of an unnumbered set, issued in 1986, that also featured a FM Trainmaster and 027 boxcar, all in the same "Miss Liberty" livery. Because the NJC was merged into Conrail in 1976, I presume the "Miss Liberty" livery is a "fantasy" scheme.

What I lack is the ability to light up all four of them at once.  They can be seen individually here:

Here’s an end to end comparison of a pair of Railking New York Central Cabooses, from different starter sets. #17517 is from 30-4188-1, led by a GP9; #17507 is from 30-4185-1, led by a 2-8-0. Notable differences are font & logo, and, one would think, different window arrangements. Until I took these photos, I never noticed the difference between the caboose sides. There’s a guy in each cupola, looking out for trouble. Interestingly enough, these sets were sold to me by the same forum member, both mint, at different times. All the usual MTH quality features - dual pick ups, metal trucks, operating couplers, interior illumination, good heft. Nice product, and these are old style rollers that don’t bounce through switches.

First photo shows MTH Railking New York Central caboose #19654. Since I bought it in 1998, it has been the only NYC wood-sided caboose that I have which I run behind steam era NYC freight trains, so it has a lot of run time. In June 2022, MTH announced new Premier models of wood-sided cabooses, and I ordered a New York Central version in addition to those of two other railroads. The new models arrived during August 2023 and I have been running NYC #19877 since then.

What is the Union Pacific car in the above photo? It looks to be an open-vestibule, early Rail Post Office car. What manufacturer made this?

Thanks Randy for the compliments on my layout! It's the Great Train Robbery from 2002 #6-31928 came with flat car with horses a gold car and a whistling baggage car and a hand Car. not a bad runner they go for about 175.00 up to 250.00 bucks. Had issues with the hand car after taking it apart a few times got it to run. Thanks again Randy! Mark
