I was in Buffalo New York this past weekend at my 35th med school reunion. I took some time to "drive around the old neighborhood". I found this bridge on Delaware Avenue( carrying the old NYC Belt Line) in North Buffalo. I was amazed to see how crisp the New York Central lettering was.....The NYC passed out of existence in 1967!

Nice... We have quite a few bridges around here with the C&O for progress still painted on the sides. The best was when I was a kid I grew up in Plymouth Michigan. one of the bridges over Hines Park Drive still had Pere Marquette painted on it in the late 70's.

Wish I would have take a picture of it back then.

Just a short look around almost any state will provide evidence of the fallen flag railroads. The railroads were a part of our once mighty industrial past. Thousands of abandoned spurs, branch lines, mainlines, bridges, grade crossings, and stations still dot the landscape. Most travelers no longer travel by train, and our vast industrial might has been moved to communist China. I was not around during the golden days of railroading but what has happened to our rail system is nothing less than terrible. The old logos of the railroads are reminders of a prosperous past but at the same time show us just how low we have sunk.

I'm glad someone had a photo they knew was recent.  Something people coming into Pittsburgh for the first time comment about is how it looks like they are out in the mountains, going under the former N&W bridge, around the bend, through Mount Washington, and emerge from the tunnel on the bridge taking them across the Monongahela River with a closeup view of downtown.

Peter or any Others,

If you want to see some Buffalo RR history, come up to the TTOS Convention August 5-9 of this year. In addition to 1 to 1 scale trains we are going to have some fantastic home layout tours as well. Not to mention the trading hall, raffles, auction, welcome party at the naval park, banquet, and a bunch of fun.

Regards,

Randall Giroux

President TTOS

Looks to me more like the name "Erie" was spelled out with leftover bathroom tiles!   This one is in Allendale, NJ.
