Over the weekend I met a newlywed couple that are spending their last weeks in their old flat in D.C. They are moving out to the left coast nearby her mother in SoCal. They were claiming the cheapest way to ship their remaining belongings was Amtrak! Packed all their items in boxes. Placed them on a couple of pallets, shrink wrapped the pallets, labeled them and delivered the pallets to Amtrak!

NOW mind you they dumped via craigslist their big items such as hand me down couches, a bed, mattresses, and other items that does no sell. They sold off their TV's, Bikes, some electronics, furniture such as a dining room set, end tables, some fixtures, some kitchen appliances. All they mostly had were boxes of clothing and various books and files.

and NO they didn't take the same trains as their pallets did. They came up to  NY for a funeral, stayed with some local relatives, and are flying out to the West Coast.

anyone here of this?  interesting!

Heck, you can get stuff shipped by airliner sometimes. I remember working a newspaper in the very early 90s, and we needed a part for the press. It was shipped down from ATL via Delta and it wasn't very much at all. We were all surprised at how affordable it was.

I also was pulling duty at an Air Force base when I was in the Army in the late 90s once and some General needed something (long forgot what it was) and someone hopped in an F-16 and brought it to him, contained in some type of empty pod slung under the plane. Imagine how much that would have cost were it not government paid!

You are right, PRRJIM, Amtrak is subsidized.  So is every airline, truck line, and river carrier.  You are also, when you drive the interstate.

                                                                                                                             Logan

I have never checked the rates, or known anyone who has used the service, but ABF freight advertises on their trailers, a "move yourself" service, where they will drop a trailer at your location.

You Then load it yourself, then they pick it up and drop it at your destination, where you unload it yourself. They just provide the trailer and move it, you handle everything else.
