Where did you get that anhydrous tank sitting next to the elevator in the last picture?

I received one just like that as a gift, probably 30 years ago now. I want to say it's an Ertl. I haven't seen it in a long time, but it seems like it was small for "O". Maybe 1:64. Could work in a background scene.

Larry,   Great to hear from you.   Thanks for the kind comments, I must have redone that station track work, the crossover and the tunnel entrance 4 times before I finally arrived at the arrangement in the photo... Using 120 inch diameter curves in front of the station works really well with the 21 inch long California Zephyr passenger cars.

I am thoroughly enjoying the Lionel Vision Line PFE Reefers you sold me last fall...  all 7 of them.  Best Regards.   Chris

Nice idea, Alan, so, OK, here is a brief photo-sketch of the layout which, I hope, may help inspire other layout builders to keep-on-truckin' - to have a lot of fun and, from my perspective, really let the imagination soar and our skills grow as we go along. Lordknowz I had no idea what I was doing  but just plunged-in and kept on going until I had something my wife and I felt was something worth playing at and enjoying with guests...

The first photos are of what you see once you arrive at the foot of the cellar stairs and look to your left. The layout - called Moon Township - spreads from there in a zig-zag flow under one first-floor room after another. The final neighborhood was added a few years after the first layout was crafted, in room space added by removing square footage (approx. 20'x7') from the garage and including it in the cellar, which involved building walls and movingphoto 1f_edited-1IMG_0067IMG_1017photosub_edited-1photosubc_edited-1Suburban Neighborhood, version3IMG_0482edIMG_9526photo 2f_edited-12IMG_5405photo 1d_edited-1photo 2d_edited-11axIMG_8608_edited-1photo 1_edited-1 walls and moving a door. My wife actually suggested taking the space from the garage (!!!!!) and adding it to the basement. She said we needed more layout (!!!!!) She did not have to say that twice. The door you can see, just above, was around the corner from itself, where those hi-chairs are now; the new wall was built to contain those ZWs and re-separate the garage from the basement anew.

(I just discovered,) left-click on each photo and you get a very nice blow-up of each, should you want to see them more closely.

A work in progress, building this in movable modules, takes alot longer, but I won't live long enough to start another from scratch if I have to relocate.   DSCN3089DSCN3078

Chris,

Impressive! what is the size of your layout? Is it an around the walls setup and large curves for those Atlas cars? Any layout diagrams ? I'm trying to get layout ideas.

I, too, would love to see a track plan from what I see in these photos. I'm not a 3-railer but I always like seeing overall designs for layouts.

Thos layout was dismantled in 2003-4 for a move.

There's something about the ruggedness of postwar stuff -- the track, the switches, etc,. that is so timelessly appealing, I'm sure your newer layout is more realistic and better, but seeing a layout like this just stirs so many positive memories. THanks for sharing these pictures!
