So outside the celebration on May 9th in Ogden with 844 and the Big Boy, they are planning a celebration on May 10th at Promontory Point, and one thing I read said they planned to have replicas of the  Jupiter and the UP 119 there. Given there haven't been tracks there for well over 70 years, are they planning to truck the replicas in and build some temporary track for them to rest on to 'recreate' the golden spike ceremony?

I believe the national Park service has them there all the time. If you look at the website for the national park service you will see pictures of them. I have never been to the Golden Spike National Historic site , but I believe they have track on the right of way as well as the national park service has a Wye for turning the locomotives. The website also lists the dates for the boiler washouts on the locomotives each month so on those dates one of the engines will not be available. Google maps shows track there.

Interestingly, the limited edition (299) LGB Golden Spike Set includes along with the Jupiter and 119 brass and diecast models, a telegraph pole with a US flag, a gold plated railroad spike (carat value not given), and a custom wood case, all for the princely sum of $10,000 USD! My dealer has presold FIVE of these sets and expects to sell more!

When the golden spike was to be driven in by former CA Governor, Leland Stanford, and one of Central Pacific’s “Big Four” owners, it and the silver headed mallet he used, we’re wired to the telegraph wires. When struck, it would complete the circuit sending out a signal that the golden spike was being driven home. But Standford swung and missed the spike, hitting the rail instead. The alert telegraph operator saw this and tapped out the three dots and then sent DONE signaling the joining was completed to the country. The spike was still tapped into the pre-drilled hole on the ceremonial laurel tie.

I just listed to a great audiobook this week on this very subject. Look for

Nothing Like It In The World, by Stephen E. Ambrose.

If I recall correctly, this was transmitted:  dot, dot, dot, DONE! Can anyone confirm that?

And was it transmitted in American or International Code.  There are differences between the two.  The American Code is, or almost is, extinct.

It was transmitted in Morse Code.

The 119 and Jupiter replicas have been involved in re-enacting the driving of the last spike at the Golden Spike National Historical Park since around 1980.

Both are versions of Morse.
