I was a Hi-railer in a previous life (before a move to a smaller place, a marriage, and kids). I sold off all of my 3 Rail brass Scale equipment and modules/layout when I moved from my house. In the new smaller house, I started accumulating a bunch of HO stuff to build a small to medium layout one day. Since then, I got married and had two kids (a bit later in life). My son is 4 years old (daughter is 6) and a total train nut like his Daddy. Mommy has allotted us some space in the newly remodeled basement family room for trains...
I was thinking of building an HO layout, but I think he is too young for that right now. So, I think I have decided to build the sections of the HO layout I have designed, and use it with temporary tops for traditional Lionel 3 Rail while he is young. I have a couple of my Dad's old Lionel postwar engines that I saved a long time ago. I think he and my daughter would both love 3 Rail operating cars. So, off to the train show we go next month to try and find some bargains on track/transformers and rolling stock... I figure when he wants to move on to a realistic HO layout (and He will because he is definitely going to be a train lifer), we can pack the 3 Rail stuff up for him to have with his kids one day! To quote my 4 year old - "It's all about trains Daddy!"
