I get this e-mail from Trainworld. Normally when I see HO I delete it but this time I opened it up. The email had videos about the new DCC

Tsunami Sound boards for rolling stock. I really like my Lionel sound tank cars and I have the new boxcar on order, however waiting for releases is taking a long time. Honestly I couldn't care less for Lionel's SantaFe boxcar, however it's the only boxcar with sound they are releasing. I want N&W, Clinchfield, C&O, Virginian sound cars. Seeing this video makes me think that could be possible

So they are saying it will work on all scales N though G

I have questions.

1) Will it work for 3 Rail O?

2) Will it be loud enough for O?

3) Will it run in Conventional or do I have to buy a DCC system?

Anyone know anything about this stuff?

I have also seen these and found them interesting.

I can't answer your questions with 100% certainty, but I'm pretty sure you would need a DCC system to do any setup or programming it might need. Pretty sure you would have to make some selections or something on the decoder.

Also may need to convert AC to DC and reduce the voltage. Not a problem with inexpensive converters available on ebay. I imagine DCC decoders would need 12VDC for power as that is I believe what all the N & HO stuff requires to operate. The car would need pick up rollers to, or some way to get power.

The larger O gauge cars would allow for a better speaker than they use in HO so I don't think sound would be an issue.

I'm sure it could somehow be made to work in O gauge though. If I ever get caught up with my ordering from these new catalogs that keep coming out I might get more serious about giving it a try. Funds seem to always be depleted for quite sometime after a new catalog comes out, then another one comes out...

Hey everyone,

To clear up some questions I had George from Soundtraxx verify the following.

Hope this helps

The SoundCar is a sound system designed for reproducing the sounds of the rolling stock.  This includes the sounds of the rail joints, (clickety-clack), flange squeal, brake set, squeal, release, flat spot and more.  The SoundCar is compatible and works best with any NMRA DCC compliant digital systems.  Following the digital DCC signal sent through the rails the SoundCar will respond and adjust the sounds as appropriate to match the work of the train.  The Soundcar is also compatible with a straight DC (Variable voltage) power pack.

In this new series only one car has sound. The only reason I ordered them was for the sound. UP was a nice choice, just not the one I wanted. I would like to buy a single car not a set of cars-especially when you consider that I don't care for the road names. Many of us in the hobby are;

1) On the East Coast

2)Model steam era cars and locomotives.

The ethanol tank cars, and yes I bought a set anyway, doesn't fit into the steam era.

The Pacific Fruit express doesn't fit for us East railroaders. I would like to see sound modules or at the very least NYC, Pennsylvania, Norfolk & Western Coal hoppers with sound. Yes I pre-ordered them anyway.

I would love it if Lionel had installed sound into their more modern mechanical reefer. I'm tempted to buy this set, and remove the board for install into their other reefer. I have no interest in something this old because I do model modern.

I don't know if I should wait for the next set that may never come?

If I remember right, the Lionel is triggered by an axle magnet? Would be cool if this Sountraxx board was triggered the same way for us command O scale users.
