A few of us Northeast train folks got together yesterday at Gerry Morlitz's to talk, view and run trains on his new layout.  A good time was had by all (even the wives, who spent the afternoon upstairs and didn't once venture into the train room!)

The below video is of a few of Gerry's engines:

  • The New Haven I5 is a Weaver engine upgraded to Proto 3 by Marty Fitzhenry with a fan driven smoke unit that can fill the room with smoke. And it did. Great engine.
  • The Trooper engine and Fire engine are MTH unshrouded J's, Proto 2, all decked out by Jeffrey Steinbacher of J.D.S. LIMITED PRODUCTIONS LLC.

Enjoy

Thanks guys. Great pictures and I think all of us had a great time. Sue and I were really glad to have you all over and from what Sue tells me, she, Carol, Barbara & Rebecca had at least as good a time upstairs as we did downstairs.

I'm sorry that I didn't get any pictures, but I was busy running trains and schmoozing. Guests included Marty, Captain John, Chris Lord, Chris Lonero, Bob DeGuarde, Kevin, Stu Rankin & Mike Caruso.

It was really great to get that New Haven I5 (just upgraded to proto3), and see that sucker fill up the basement with smoke. I KNOW I need to get nada and/or eliminator smoke fluid from Jeb at York. The Fire Engine train and Trooper train have been "resting" for a while and it was nice to get them out and run them next to each other. Really neat with those LEDs.

But the best thing was the people. It's always about the people.

IMG_2610IMG_2618IMG_2609Thank you Gerry & Sue for your warm hospitality in having this get together for us. Gerry's layout ran flawlessly running DCS WIFI and Legacy. All the trains ran quietly over the cushioned rubber roadbed. As Chris posted in his pictures & videos Gerry was way ahead of Lionel  and MTH with his Police & Fire 1st responder engines.

As Marty said, "A great warm up for York.

So I found out that if I'm going to do this again, I really need to minimize the smoke odor. I know I used to be able to pre-order from Jeb at MegaSteam before York but didn't see anything. So I e-mailed him (jkmegasteam@aol.com) and he is bringing eliminator for me. Problem solved.

Alex, I look forward to seeing you at York. I assume you will be there. I was sorry you couldn't make it. You know you are always welcome.

Peter, you would have loved the I5 pulling 18" K-Line NH passenger cars. It is a truly fantastic consist. The quest for this I5 was lengthy. When Weaver first put the I5 in their catalog (when was that -- about 15 years ago?), I ordered one. Those were the days you put deposits on engines. After a year or a year and a half, it wasn't even on the water and MTH put a premier I5 in their catalog. I ordered it, canceled the Weaver (lost my deposit) and waited. MTH canceled their premier I5. Weaver then did a second run of I5's, but by that time, I was truly discouraged and didn't order it. Anyway, eventually I circled back. Marty told me that some of these Weavers were much better than others (at my age CRS is a factor and I can't remember why), but I got one of the good ones. Then it was time to upgrade to DCS. Well, MTH was in the transition on the upgrade boards from proto2 to proto3, so again it was a wait. But here it is, beautiful and a total winner. I am much indebted to Marty Fitzhenry for his guidance and help.

I look forward to seeing you at York. Are you organizing the Thursday breakfast? If so, I'm in.

BTW, if you're ever in the NYC area and able to visit, let me know. I'd love to have you over.

Gerry

The Weaver I-5 makes a great PS3 conversion.  The rollers on the tender tied to the engine rollers at the board will let you navigate any track system.   With a new fan driven smoke unit, it is a winner.  My I-5 is the only brass locomotive I have.  I am a die cast guy all the way.  I keep haunting Mike W to build that locomotive.
