Be very careful when you leave the Train Shack, If you turn left and walk to the end of the block and cross the road you will find the largest coffee/pastry shop in LA, I mean its HUGH. There might be no cars on the road, nobody walking on the sidewalk, but the place will be packed.
If you are on a diet turn right.
It's a great store and super nice folks.
Yes the Train Shack is terrific and as Bill said that pastry shop (Portos) is fantastic and dangerous!!
I found Portos by accident too with the family. We went to the Train Shack to pick up a repaired engine, saw the place and we couldn't resist the bakery area which is fantastic! The Cuban food is good but the bakery is oh boy! One in Burbank, Glendale, and Downey.
Bakery sounds yummy.
Nice place/nice people. I miss Gary. His kids run the store now and seem to be handling the business well. And yes, I know about the bakery. Good stuff but not diet-friendly.
Our next Great Layout Adventures video (the infamous "missing" GLA 9) will have a short feature in it about The Train Shack.
Jim Barrett and I recently spent some time in California shooting two wonderful layouts. The layout owners/builders do most of their business with The Train Shack.
We'll have it available on Blu Ray and DVD at York.
Big Sale this weekend at the Train Shack! Great store and great people.

They are the closeset thing I have to an LHS but are a pretty rough drive in LA traffic. There is a really nice lady there and others that helped me get started. I walked in with nothing and walked out with a new hobby. I haven't been back since after an awful experience over the phone when I inquired about getting an MTH on-line purchase serviced under warranty. Don't know who that was. Certainly nobody I talked to there previously. Sounds like it's time to "get over it" and go back.
I love the Train Shack. I try to go there every time we go down (from the SF Bay Area) to LA to visit our son at UCLA. The pastry shop is called Portos...and we can't resist it. We stop there right after our visit to the Train Shack! Matt
