When I first purchased my DCS WiFi unit; I also purchased and downloaded the upgraded operating app to my company provided iPhone.  I’ll be retiring the end of May and last week purchased a new iPhone for my personal use.

Is there a way to transfer the upgraded WiFi operating app from one iPhone to another or must I repurchase the upgrade and download it to my new personal phone?

Hi Curt:

Step 1Step 2

Step 3

Step 4Step 5Step 6

When you purchased you new phone, the Apple Store should transfer everything from your old phone to your new Apple phone.  I just used these steps yesterday because I added two new engines to my roster of 21. If I lost my phone or it was stolen, I would not have to start over.

Hope this helps, good luck: Gary

Gary has a nice tip up there for keeping your info, that's a new one on me too and very nice to know.

But, I think your Apple ID has to remain the same on the new device for transferring apps to other or new devices. If they are the same, you should be able to get it free from the app store. If the Apple IDs are different I don't think you can transfer the apps?

We had an ipad under my wife's Apple ID, which I used to purchase a couple of apps, and nothing would transfer to my devices under my Apple ID. If that's the case, I don't know if Apple would help you with changing the IDs or not? I never pursued it with Apple and wife's ipad as most of the stuff on the ipad I no longer used.

I use iTunes to back-up my iPhone on a hard drive on the computer.

When we get a new phone or iPad , we can then perform a restore of the old phones info to the new phone.

I do not know if this can be a selective restore.

There is also Family Sharing to permit the sharing of apps and music and such. Explore that possiblility.

Finally, make an appointment at an Apple store and they will show you how to do it and do it for you.

If work IT has the iPhone locked down, ask them to assist in transferring personal. Typically, they are not interested and delete everything, but, you could get lucky.

It is all tied to the Apple ID.

Congrats on retiring!  Woohoo!

I think the possible sand in the gears will be the account holder - if it's your employer, I think you're probably going to be spending another $25.  Might be worth a phone call to MTH - maybe they'll adjust the charge?

This is an example of something we don't often think about when we use our work devices for personal stuff.  If your medical or other appointments are in your calendar, they will disappear.  If you get prescription notifications, bank and credit card info, utility bills, etc. sent to your work email, they'll stop too.  And don't forget any personal contacts that are stored in there.

Mallard:

Your points are all well made.  This is why I allowed myself two months to start shifting info from the company phone to a personal one.

With regard to your comments; I’ve been thinking what a mess it would be if ones departure from a job were sudden; in other words your boss says you’re fired and a security guy hands you a box and says “you have five minutes”.  Kind of a sobering thought when you consider how much stuff we store on our phones.

And Gary’s instructions worked!  I was able to email the upgrade to my personal email then downloaded it to the new phone.

I manage mobile devices (iPhones and iPads) for my department at work.   I advise all staff who have company issued devices to treat the devices like they are not theirs because they are not.   So don't download and install non-work related programs (like DCS WiFi), apps, and files onto company issued devices and computers because they can take them back/remotely deactivate anytime they want.  Also, never ever use your personal Apple ID (or email) on a company device.   If you separate suddenly or retire, your personal apps/files/email may get left on company storage devices.  Save your files/apps and protect your privacy and buy yourself a used iPad mini on eBay for $100.

Change your Apple ID from your work email to a personal email. Here's how:

1) Login into manage your Apple ID here.

2) Once logged in you should be here. At the top of the white background is the "Account" section. Click on the "Edit" button on the right-hand side of the Account section.

3) At the top of the white-background area, in the center, you will see "APPLE ID" with your email address below and a "Change Apple ID..." hyperlink just below. Click on the "Change Apple ID..." hyperlink.

4) A small dialogue window will pop up saying "Enter a new email address to use as your Apple ID:" Enter your personal email address that you want to use and click on "Continue."

5) It should walk you through the rest of the steps.

Once you've changed your Apple ID, you can sign in and download your apps to your personal device.
