Ed Parley was a good friend
a buddy to the core
we shared so many interests
had me coming back for more

Ed always had great stories
and a quip to make you smile
always there to help a friend
he'd go the extra mile

Served his country and his fam'ly
and the power company
then after he retired
he found a new hobby

Ed cleared his mother's attic
and he found his old Marx train
he took it all apart to fix
and made it run again

Ed was a repairman
he could make those old trains go
he'd fix old rusty motors
and make the whistles blow

Ed hunted for more old trains
soon had his workshop full
he did great restorations
that were truly wonderful

Ed's life was full and varied
he'd really been around
building those substations
had his feet square on the ground

Ed once was in the Navy
saw an H-bomb light the sky
somehow it had changed him
can't help but wonder why

We still had so many projects
we are sad that Ed is gone
we only get so many years
before we must move on

We remember Ed with fondness
he has left a legacy
for all his friends and neighbors
and his entire family tree

The last name has been changed for the privacy of the family. Ed died of bone cancer at age 75.

He was in "Operation Hardtack" in 1958, some of the last atmospheric H-bomb tests.

A real friend, greatly missed.

RIP Sir.

The Watch

For twenty years
This sailor has stood the watch

While some of us were in our bunks at night
This sailor stood the watch

While some of us were in school learning our trade
This shipmate stood the watch

Yes.. even before some of us were born into this world
This shipmate stood the watch

In those years when the storm clouds of war were seen brewing on the horizon of history
This shipmate stood the watch

Many times he would cast an eye ashore and see his family standing there
Needing his guidance and help
Needing that hand to hold during those hard times
But he still stood the watch

He stood the watch for twenty years
He stood the watch so that we, our families and
Our fellow countrymen could sleep soundly in safety, Each and every night
Knowing that a sailor stood the watch

Today we are here to say
'Shipmate... the watch stands relieved
Relieved by those You have trained ,Guided, and Lead
Shipmate you stand relieved.. we have the watch..."

"Boatswain..Standby to pipe the side...Shipmate's going Ashore.."

Many Thanks to all of you folks for your thoughtful responses.

Ed's various family members are keeping all the better trains. I've been happy to get some of Ed's old parts and "project items".

We had a lot of good laughs about some of the oddball items that Ed had found over the years.

Oftentimes when I'm running trains or working on trains, I recall that Ed had given me some useful parts or interesting "project" items and I find myself saying ... "Thanks Ed !"
