While reading about the former Southern Railway lines (UK) it slowly dawned on me that the 750 volt third-rail has no protection covering. I know that British railroads have fenced ROWs and that level crossings are constructed in such a way so as to limit access by the public, but what about protection for workers and stray animals?

True. There are 2 videos online that I know of where someone in India stands up on the top of an electric train and eats the overhead. Hilarity does not ensue.

I wouldn't suggest going to look for them unless you're not squeamish at all...
