I hope people do not do what I saw riding behind Amtrak AFT 4449 Special and SP 4449 World's Fair Daylight.  Fans were converting US Alt 90 from a bidirection 2 lane road to 2 lanes westbound Rosenberg to Eagle Lake TX.  Thank goodness no one got killed.  I felt safer on the train.

I watched a car go sailing off into a culvert while chasing a NS steam trip many years ago as nobody in the car was watching the road. I never heard what happened to the people in the car.

Also watched people do insane things trying to get ahead of 4449/700 for the NRHS Portland convention trip, going down Hwy 14 on the north bank of the Columbia, along the old SP&S to Wishram. I never heard of any head-on collisions on that 2-lane road but wouldn't be shocked if any had happened that day.

When we went eclipse chasing two summer's ago, we were north of Boise on a state route and there were big electronic signs all along the edge of the road for 60 miles saying:  "Don't even think about parking here during the eclipse..."

I would dearly love to see 4014 on its inaugural run, but the timing doesn't work for me and I suspect that everywhere will be packed.  So I'll wait for the film at 11...

After working the midnight shift for 30 years in my industry, there are some advantages to it, this being one of them for those guys. They get to move it out, no fifty million people standing outside and around and getting in the way. Just them and the locomotive, all quiet and being able to say "We moved it first!" Now that's what I call priceless!

Nice post from Ed Dickens on the UP Steam Facebook page.

“Trevor Heath great post. Thank you for sharing. It is very heartwarming for us seeing you and everyone waiting and watching from afar. Soon we’ll be seeing everyone as we take the Locomotive out for some more “break-in ops”.

A minor correction to your post. This work has been completed by our small group, only the 2 person father son contractor team to work on the monumental cleaning effort of the water space on the tender and many other tasks to help us with water softeners and the like. And recently we have enjoyed the support of Dan from a local sheet metal shop. Dan fabricated and and fit up those nice looking cylinder jackets, and of course very importantly, our close friend Paul from RailGiants has been here helping us since we were in LA back in 2013.

This work has been all UP Steam. We have enjoyed the enthusiastic support of our executive team and all the thousands of men and women of this great company helping us and pulling hard to provide us the support we need. Naturally there are the various suppliers, machine shops etc that have provided much material and custom machine work at their facilities.

This is a proud UP product.

Best regards

Ed, Austin, Ted, Kirt, Bruce, Don, Jimmy , Garland, and Troy.”
