Looks good! I hear chuffing and I see a clear stack!!
Cylinder clock [sic]?
Sounds like a timing issue.
She looked spectacular.
I couldn't think of a better example to illustrate "never say never".
Excellent! It's Alive!
I watched a great feed on Instagram of her being paced. I actually let my 8 year old son stay up to after 10 to watch with me. Hope he gets up for school okay tomorrow, but it was worth it.
These are not my photos but screen shots from from instagram poster wahsatchunionpacific live feed. He stated in the live feed to take screen shots and post them, so I take that as permission to do so. Enjoy.
I was just wondering about the second crew for the 844. I know Austin was firing with Ted tonight, so that makes three (Ed, Austin, and Ted). Who is the fourth?
I noticed Bob Kittel (CMO and Engineer on Santa Fe 3751) was posting from inside the steam shop last night. Bob and Ed have run the 3751 together in the past.
Things that make you wonder...
Looks like everyone's stopped to get a Pepsi.

HOLY....
LIVE: From the Trains Magazine, shared via Facebook procedures. Before and after sunset, just outside of Cheyenne. May 2, 2019 Test run, first time on the main line. Congrats to Ed Dickens & the steam shop crew.

Thanks to all those posting photos and video, I wish I could see it in person, but, this is awesome to witness via the forum. Thanks for the update Gary! And way to go Union Pacific!

I have sent my congrats to the UP public relations person for my area, great job by my hometown railroad.
CONGRATULATIONS to the entire UP Steam Program crew for their brilliant accomplishment! And KUDOS to the UP corporate leadership for their full support and funding of this most notable project! A salute to a GREAT railroad!
Simply wonderful!! So much for all the "nay-sayers" on here over the past few weeks...well done UP.
MIKE (In England)
Test run OK. But the real test will be getting to Utah and back. In one piece. And everybody safe.
But it would be nice for the DDA40X to be the helper. Or at least the SP heritage and a frrshly painted UP flag unit.
Thank you for everyone keeping us up to date. I watch the live Trains feed. I must admit, it was quite the sight to see the Big Boy on the rails again!

Looks like they took her up to a highball yesterday in photos 4-6!
This 4014 Chase Video is from Mike Armstrong, CoasterFan2105, with 425K subscribers on YouTube making his channel one to the top Rail-fan Channels on YouTube.
Mike will be chasing the 844 & 4014, He says: “MORE COMING SOON! Union Pacific 4014 is one of the largest steam locomotives in the world”.
Below is his video, shot yesterday…..

First off, let me say - this is awesome. I did have a few doubts but here it is!
On a slightly critical note, it does sound like a wedge needs tightened up or something, you can here some knocking as she rolls by...
And on top of all that, did they really paint "Big Boy" on the smoke box door!?! That'll drive the foamers and the modelers nuts
Looks like the piston packing on the front cylinders need a little tightening.

That's what others have said but that's why they test run.
Exciting times for steam fans, youtube videos of the BB galore over the next several months.
Does this mean the diesel numbered 4014 has been re-numbered to avoid conflict?
On some of the aerial footage Lee posted, I've seen steam leaking through the front sand box. I'm guessing there was a steam coil in there to dry the sand, and is perhaps leaking?
That is why they do shake down runs...
The wahsatchunionpacific live feed on Instagram had WAY better coverage yesterday than Trains Magazine. If you're looking to watch live on Saturday I would recommend using them instead of Trains.
Amazing accomplishment. Hat's off to the UP shop.
Now, to pray for the idiots that will be chasing this spectacle of steam so no tragedy(ies) takes place.
Upside: Looked like all concerned in the videos above were well clear of RR property. Good job enthusiasts!
Andre
Well done, Union Pacific Steam Program!
Way to go UP!!
Congrats and thank you to Ed Dickens and all of the steam crew! It is a wonderful sight!
The clanking tells me he is either drifting or the throttle is just barely cracked in that footage.

4014's return has distressed The Fuhrer!
Link to Hitler Rants parody on 4014's return to steam . . .

I was also peaking at the diesel exhaust as I thought the loco was not doing much work so to speak, then then you can also compare it to old BW videos of bigboys running in the yard or with trains, and then realize that there was a lot of variation to the steam/stack output due load, grade, site conditions, etc. Lot of variables..
MUCHO GRACIOUS, DANKE, and THANK YOU to all those that shared those wonderful photos and videos of this truly landmark event!
QUESTION: Did they complete the test run as planned or was it cut short?
Erik, stunning pictures and video! Thanks for posting.
Thrilling sight!
Just watched a very high quality drone chase video embedded in a Jalopnik article. Really amazing.
Looks great. Don't think the "big boy" was necessary on the smoke box door, but whatever. At least, thankfully, they didn't white stripe the wheels.
Dumb question for the day: Since it's an excursion and special events locomotive, do you think they'll chrome-cap the cylinders?

I wondered this as well. Knowing that turning 4014 wasn't realistic for a short test hop, having the diesel facing rearward for the outbound run was a given. But yeah, they seemed to just stop in the literal middle of nowhere (which granted is where Cheyenne is, as I've been there and seen it in person years ago) and just stand around...
I'm with '41.......thank goodness no white tires! 4014 looks magnificent. They cut the completion of the restoration awfully close. Perhaps an example of precision railroading!
Thank you Union Pacific, executives, restoration crew, muffled legal department, all employees. A truly great moment in railroading.
Looking forward to seeing 4014 on national news outlets.

I 100% agree. I did have their feed up on my phone and trains up on my laptop during the whole thing.
Yes the trip was successful that I know of. I have a man undercover out there and he said that the train was heading back earlier this morning.
