I respectfully request some input from both Rich and Jack, if they would be kind enough to share their expertise and reactions to this test run.

Those are your shots Howard!
Been looking at the various videos, wow, it looks good! Even if they were taking it easy, it looked really impressive, to say the least.
So good to see more steam on the move. Well done to all involved.
Now, Norfolk Southern, get a clue on how to generate good PR. A new paint scheme is not enough.
I have paid and would pay again to see these beasts with fire in their bellies. Nothing compares. I think I need to buy some "Union Pacific" cars for my layout. See how easy that can happen? Off to the bay.
Take this as you like but they made it 31 miles to Nunn, Colorado last night/ early this morning then made the decision to tow 4014 backwards to Cheyenne.
Something about the lubricators not supplying enough oil even though they were cranked wide open.

It's not like they could turn 4014 out there, so of course it'd have to be hauled back to the roundhouse on it's first post-restoration run. Heck, I'd have done it that way, too (only that maybe I'd have made the run outbound without the diesel, just to prove to the world that the 4014 is doing all the work, but that's just me)...

Great video, Erik.
I can't imagine what that must have felt like, seeing it under steam. I rode behind N&W 1218 when she was still steaming and even that was tough to accept a real life mainline articulated was in steam. But this? I still can't really accept that it's happened...
Just too awesome for words alone! The few minor problems will be quickly resolved by the steam shop crew.
Thanks for the video Erik.
That's the most realistic bigboy I've seen made yet!
Trains Magazine was live today, on Facebook, two times from inside the Union Pacific Steam Shop. They will be having 4 camera chase teams leapfrogging after the 844 & 4014. If any chase team is going to take us for a ride on the 4014 it will be the professionals.
The other local team on Instagram is good and they take us to a lot of cool spots. I will have them on my iPhone.

I’m honored that you would make this request of me, but I’ll have to apologize to you, Art. You’ll not see anything from me on this. I’m looking in on this thread every once in a while just to keep tabs on things, but I have not watched any of the videos and don’t intend to. Given the situation out there, I just don’t care.
And since Jack has not made any recent posts to this thread, I suspect he feels the same way.
'Zacly! With that Big Bruiser coupled in behind we'll never know, will we? "Only 4014's hairdresser knows". Well, Steam People will know.
2124&2101, 8444, 5632, then much later 614, 765, 611 and later 4449 were authoritative. Doyle's comment to me Summer '84 was: "We stormed that anthill" (wrt the 4449's attack of the hill Eastbound out of Benson). Ross burnt the paint off of 614's smokebox climbing the grade from Rockwood to Somerset in ....'81??. We shall see what happens wrt the actual performance of #4014.

Not to make trouble, but in all of the videos I've seen in the past 24 hours, why does it seem like the Big Boy isn't doing any real work? I'm not a steam locomotive expert, but I know when one it working hard and when one isn't. It appears that this one isn't.

Perhaps it’s in a break in period or shake down run. I wouldn’t put a fully qualified freight consist behind it without doing some test runs. Despite the fact that it’s been gone over, refurbed, etc., it has been sitting for a while.

Check this break-in workout of 3985 dragging two diesel units in dynamics and compare it to what we've seen out of the Big Boy thus far.
This operation was under the auspices of Steve Lee, not Ed Dinkens.
UP# 3985 Test Run 26June 2008 Cheyenne WY
To RickO, Nick and RideTheRails -
Thank you for your responses. I thought it was just me for a moment. There's definite differences between the test runs of 3985 and 4014.
RickO posted:p51 posted:(only that maybe I'd have made the run outbound without the diesel, just to prove to the world that the 4014 is doing all the work, but that's just me)...
Most folks don't know /don't care if its doing all of the work. This was evident years ago with all of the videos and excitement when 4014 was dragged cold and dead. I imagine Ed will address any first run issues. but even if he didn't, as long as it rolls down the track with some smoke here and some steam there it doesn't really matter.
Note the testing of 3985 in this video. Starting at 3:30. See the power of the exhaust, listen to the chuff, its WORKING, with 2 diesels in dynamic braking:
( Also note the lack of steam chest leakage)
Now watch 4014 again smoke is merely wafting out of the stack and note how the throttle is ramped up on the diesel :
Exactly, I hadn't found that video, but was doing the same thing, comparing to old BW video's of both engine's pulling and or running in the yard. It seems pretty clear like you state, the BB is lipsyncing which would be unfortunate. Hopefully, they it is actually capable of running under its own power at this point,
I hope I don't get lost in the sea of comments here, but I just put out a new video! My tribute to the restoration effort, if you will.
"Big Boy" is chalked on the smokebox. Nice !
It's a tribute to steel's durability that a locomotive could sit mostly unattended in a park for 60 years - - - and be brought back to fully annimated life!
Read a book a while ago regarding what the world would look like if man disappeared entirely, and the author speculated that man's works would predominately have vanished in about 50 years. All that would remain would be stone structures and the steel skeletons of sky scrapers. Perhaps we can add a Big Boy, or two, to the list !

Holy Crap!!! Just watching the enormous amount of black smoke pouring out of the locomotive in the first video - and steam locomotives were in operation everywhere for what, like 125 years (?) - I'm surprised anything survived and that we even have an atmosphere.
Can someone give me a live feed link for today's christening please.
Someone please, please, PLEASE tighten/replace those piston packing glands!!

They looked sealed up from the trains live feed and all the videos on FB. Well at least on the engineers side
Anyone have a better stream? The Trains stream can't even keep the camera focused! Cinema photographers, these guys ain't!

There’s people chasing on YouTube, just have to keep searching. The packing is better but not fully fixed on the fireman’s side

Thanks guys you are the best, Well this day is going to be all about 4014, I am so glad I bought the Lionel BTO Big Boy to look over, it been a while since I stuck my head in the real ones firebox at Pomona fairground in So Cal, I remember thinking how I would have love to see here run back in the day. I love that machine.

The real "Dog and pony show" is watching y'all try to micro-analyse something that you know nothing about.
Did I read somewhere- or imagine- that they are using a Challenger tender because the Big Boy's tender is not ready?
