The current UP 4014 and the UP 4884 are on their way to CA to pick up the Once and Future UP 4014 and return it to Wyoming. Came through Ogden late today unfortunately I couldn't get a photo of them due to that nasty work thing

Good news...the 4014 will be on the way home soon.
Here is a picture of the hospital train
If that's what I think it is, they're carrying spare parts, supplies and a mobile machine shop with them. I'm definitely taking off Monday morning to follow it up the hill from Colton. Thanks for the heads up and photo.
Oh I believe it is what your thinking....nce photo. Thnx Chris.
Matt you know its going up the Mojave Sub and not the Cajon sub right? It will be inspected at the Canyon siding, then onto the Cajon Sub at Silverwood.

I know. They'd be using the old SP tracks that run over the I-10 west of Rancho and join the ATSF/UP tracks near Devore. There's almost no way they'd be able to make the turn at the Colton diamond (now a flyover).
By the way, do you guys ever run on that route? As I recall, they had a connection to the Cajon tracks somewhere near the summit.
They are NOT even crossing over at Devore this time, they are going all the way to the top on the old SP line and cut over at Silverwood. The Canyon siding is the first siding west of Summit, so just before they get to the top, they will inspect it in the siding.
Yes my crew is all qualified on the Mojave Sub. When they tore out the diamond, and realigned the transfer track under the new flyover, we had to go that way for almost a month. Every once in awhile we still go that way if our hill is a mess, but it's usually a bigger mess on the Mojave Sub with just the single track and 3 sidings. We prefer to go that way though because it's a extra day's pay for running off our assigned territory

So when Big Boy 4014 is being pulled to Cheyenne, will it need to be renumbered since the power will be UP4014? I'm assuming there has to be some sort of record of all cars and engines in a train and in this case you'd have duplicate 4014s.

Reportedly, the 4-8-8-4 4014 has already been "renumbered" within the Union Pacific system. Yesterday, I think. She is now OFFICIALLY "UPP4014", i.e. Union Pacific Passenger 4014". The diesel locomotive stays "UP4014".
They're working fast. Based on the schedule, they're doing a LOT of inspection stops. Rest assured there's going to be a video for sale on this one down the road.

Thanks for the pics....guess they're ready to go.
The whole Big Boy 4014 story that is unfolding is fantastic, and I am anxious to see that Big Boy run under steam.
In case you guys didn't just see that brilliant flash of light from wherever you are...
Ohhhhhhh, "HOSPITAL" train!
The live stream is up..or rather it was and by the maps shown it looks like to me that it's heading straight up the Cajon Pass
as of now trains magazine's live video gets a grade of D.
once it left Colton yard there is nothing.
Besides the Diesel 4884 and 4014, what does the consist look like?
Boy, Kinda hit & miss with the "live" feed but I did see it
Cell signal through that whole area is hit and miss. It's hard enough to get text or calls through there, let alone upload live video. My guess is we wont see much until it gets to Victorville, and it's already way behind schedule.
cajon pass has an elevation of all most 4000 feet with lots of valleys.
.
I am following the railgaints twitter page. they have lots of updates.
or the up steam page
It left Colton yard well after 9:00. Looks like they were running about 25MPH when they crossed the bridge over the 210 Freeway/Highland. At 8:00, we got distracted as a long freight of empties went by first.
Besides the Diesel 4884 and 4014, what does the consist look like?
4014 on point UPP4014 in the middle and 4884 behind, then the hospital train, plus a generator car and several TTX flats, one of which was carrying a UP pickup and the Steam program's trailer.
Here are links to the video I got. The train was moving a little faster than anticipated and I barely got the footage on the second video.

train just arrived at Victorville ca and trains magazine interviewed someone who thought there are 3 thousand people there.
there are sure a lot of people.
video working great now just too many people to see much.
I've never seen that many cars or people in Victorville at the same time
Thanks for the videos guys. The live feed was pretty cool...can't believe the amount of people out there to chase/watch the move...unreal.
So the assistant editor of Trains is the one doing the live stream "reporting"?? On monday they were setup on hill 285?? and he was describing the consist which was fine until he got to the 6 empty flatcars and he said something like "I don't know what that's about"??
And he's the assistant editor??!!
I quit reading Trains when they ran that article titled "Big Boy Big Mistake".
In theory, I'd agree with many of Ed King's points in that article, but not so sure how either an N&W A or Y6 would respond to Uncle Pete's grade of coal...in the long term.
The East Coast could do it in half that time….LOL
Thanks for videos and Pictures...Good Stuff!!

maybe Rich can answer how long it took the 765 to get restored.

Which time? Do you mean the initial restoration in the mid-1970s, or the complete rebuild during the 1990s thru early 2000s?
