Valve ID... from a locomotive???

A friend brought in a huge valve (intake or exhaust) today claiming it was "from a train". Is there anyone here who can help me identify it? It is 19-1/2 inches tall, 5-1/16" diameter head, 1-1/16" diameter stem. It has "NDE 1124V" stamped on the head. There are no other identifying marks on it. I am at work right now and my camera is at home so I can't post pics until tonight...

 

I am probably gonna buy this thing just because it is too cool, but it would be awesome if I could figure out what it's from...

It looks to me like this valve was never used. There doesn't appear to be any wear marks at all on the stem where it would ride in the valve guide or where the valve seats in the head. It is also super clean. The guy who brought it in got it from his Dad's garage. He has family who worked in manufacturing or something so I wonder if this might have failed a quality control inspection and ended up in the garage instead of the scrap bin at work???
