Thanks,
Whose catalog are you referring to? Weaver made all different paint & lettering versions of the famous B&O "wagon top" (round roof) boxcar, and they are dead nuts correct!
I think the only automobile cars on the Virgian were the 25 50 foot PRR style cars. Modern steel 40 foot cars were of a single door AAR or PS-1 design. The number on the lionel car looks unusual for a Virginian Box car. It is nice looking .
I did some further checking myself, and determined this car is fantasy, but based on another car. The Virginian had 25 50 foot dd round roof boxcars for automotive service, and these were the only round roof cars they had. The majority of the boxcars were PS-1s, BX-15 class. All boxcars were numbered between 61500 and 63399 regardless of their class. No VGN freight car that I can find (using an ORER from 1956) used the 3000 series that LIONEL used for their new car.
The LIONEL version does look like a 40 foot version of the automobile boxcar, but is not correct for the railroad. Oh well, I was hoping for another VGN car to use with my scale cars, but since they didn't use 40 foot round roof cars, I will pass. I do like the CofG and D&M PS-1 boxcars, though will have to verify them as well.
If you like the 40 foot car, you could consider a PRR car from the prior catalog. Lionel offered both single and double door versions . PRR box cars were so plentiful that its likely these cars operated on the Virginian at some point. Lionel also made the single door in the Seaboard and N&W scheme. These could be possibilities for you as well.
