Not having tried this but I have several towers and yard lights whcih I would like to install LED light bulbs in.

However I have noticed LED bulbs seem to shine less (brightness) or seem not to light a freight yard yard as well as when incandescent bulbs are used.

Can LED bulbs rated at a lower voltage be used at higher voltages without damage to the bulbs - that is can a 12 volt LED be used when say 16 volts are applied and will they shine brighter ?

Thanks for any insight or suggestion.

Most LEDs cast a very narrow beam of light. That may be why it seems they don't light the yard as well. This is probably the same reason you are not using LED light bulbs to light your living room right now. (Think about it, the principle is the same). Most white LEDs are rated at 3.2 volts and still shine plenty bright at only 3 volts. They do come in other voltages though. I came across some 6 volt LEDs by mistake. It took some experimenting to figure out the correct voltage. At 3 volts, no light. At 9 volts, burns out. Hmmm.
