Since installing Atlas 6924 relay boards for all my Atlas switches, I've had no problems.   Relay boards are listed for 6-22VAC/DC Power.  Switch motor power is (18 VAC), a seperate power source, via Terminals InA, SW PWR IN, and InB.  The built in time out feature inhibits switch motor burnout, a primary reason for installing the 6924 relay boards.
You can also power the short dead rail sections of the switch to enhance run though power, Power Routing.  and link a control signal systems.

radio shack is a bit expensive but good in a pinch for a few parts. In quantity any electrical parts supplier such as Mouser or www.allelectronics.com

 

1000uf 35 volt or more is probably enough to throw the machines. Shown is 2200 uf. Remember the AC voltage is increased by 41% so the 14 volts charges to around 19. 

 

Most any coil or relay can be thrown with this method,here is another example of use where just momentary action is required.
