I've not seen a Weaver brass engine sell for so much over retail in quite a while -- I take it this one is pretty rare?

Since 2001 I've seen this particular engine at local train shows as low as $500. I passed on it at least four times at that price, even though it has been on my want list since 1997. I decided to wait for a MTH, Liones or 3rd Rail version.
For some reason strange reason, as it has started to appear on EBay the price has jumped up to the current level?
It is a beautiful engine to behold but doesn't have the current electronics. Having said that, I'm looking forward to it being released. I don't understand why it is taking so long for MTH, Lionel or 3rd Rail to do so. I bought a beautiful set of passenger cars as far back as 2001.
Gasp.
I think that it's really stupid that now everybody who has this engine in their collection, is trying to offload on eBay now, just because they saw that one went for so high.
Just because this one particular auction got a little ridiculous, doesn't mean that this engine in super rare. It just means the bidders are lucky enough to have some extra cash.
And now you can't find this engine for under $1,900 on eBay. And that's really a shame. And to hop on BigBoy's rant, I agree, its a stunning model, but the electronic are absolutely ancient compared to todays standards.
A prime example:
Further proof, perhaps, that the end of days is near/ That seems like a ridiculous price to pay, but then all it takes is one buyer . . .
Wow my $$ net worth[on paper] just went up! I have a couple of the 4-6-2 #1380s, one T/A Studios TMCC and one Conventional.
When I kick the bucket I have no doubt that the Domestic CEO will sell everything on my Locomotive roster far below "book value". Probably "buy one get one free"--she is really into that tactic, but watch out for the awesome S&H on the second one.
So, be patient, stick around for "the end of days" as Lee stated it. .
Got one about 6 months ago at auction; $700+. I think one went for maybe less
since then. They are indeed rare (by definition) - took a while to show up.
It is a gorgeous loco, and has an early date with ERR electronics. Not that I care,
but the QSI/PS1 electronics in it won't leave reset ("ding-ding"), even with a PW
transformer and an afternoon of charging, so I've never seen it move.
But, it was always destined for CC. Maybe it had a date with a bad battery in another life.
A PS3 or Legacy version will appear within 18 months. Why? Because I bought this one and have to roll my own Command. Works every time. Brass is really nice, though.
I don't think that an importer will make a Ps-4 "Tennessean" unless a minimum of 50-100 orders are pending.
Those on the Forum from the very beginning will recall that our surveys of the "Kudzu Krowd"over time to get certain Southern Railway Steamers imported have been a total failure due to extremely low commitment to order by Southern o-gaugers. The Southern Ms-4, the S1 2-10-2 "Hogs" or "Big Fifties', the Ls-2 2-8-8-2s Mallets and the Ps-4 "Tennessean" to name four.
The much discussed and complained about Ms-4 Heavy Mikado, Southerns mainline freight engine 1923-1953, drew 9 maybes and 6 of those tentatives based on unknown pricing? The "Tennessean" and others mentioned as I recall received no commitments when surveyed several years ago. Southern Railway Sean can vouch for that lack of interest.
No one will import on that low degree of interest. Hopefully it has since changed since but I doubt it.
