I have a weaver hopper that took the express route to the floor.  The truck assembly is the flexible kind that has side frames that snap into the center portion.  That piece that snaps in is what broke off so no easy reassembly.  I remember reading a long time ago about replacement trucks for Weaver cars, but some folks thought they were too flexible and causing problems.  I never paid attention because I never really had a problem with the originals.  I have some other truck assemblies laying around but none really fit.

Where do I find replacements for the old 3 piece Weaver truck assemblies?

thanks in advance - JHZ563

The one thing to look for in Weaver truck replacement is that they are designed so that the bolster is part of the model, not the truck.  As a result, MTH, Lionel, and Atlas are not great candidates for replacements as the bolster is built into the truck.  You can find Weaver replacements online through everyone's favorite auction site for reasonable prices.  Weaver trucks are a little different as they were the first major O scale company to offer their trains in two and three rail.

Good luck!

On a visit with a friend to Weaver's facility shortly after the two-bay hopper was introduced, Bob told us that he designed the car to use Athearn trucks as he had not designed his trucks yet. I just compared an Athearn and Weaver bolster and they are the same as far as mounting geometry is concerned. I have used both under Weaver cars with no problem. BTW, the Weaver roller bearing truck is a Barber S-2 and the Athearn is a Symington design.

As @GG1 4877 mentioned,  much of the bolster height is part of the car body.  My usual go to for replacement trucks is ex mpc era lionel examples that I have scavenged from donor cars. In this case an mpc donor would be way too high.  I would rather have a purpose made compatible truck.  If someone knows where to snag one please let me know. Thanks

My recollection is that it has the same crossbar and bolster configuration as a Weaver equalized truck. I have a car somewhere in storage that has Athearn O scale trucks on it with the same wheel sets I use to convert Weaver equalized trucks. Another thought -- I may have a spare pair of Weaver Betts in my parts box. If so, I'll send you an E-mail off-list.

The way these usually break is right where the side frame mounting pin attaches to the side frame. Trying to glue it usually does not work for 2 reasons: First, the truck parts are molded in Derlin, an engineering plastic. I have yet to find a glue that works well with it. Second, the pin is designed to rotate in the bolster. Getting enough glue on the joint freezes that motion. But the truck still wants to move in that plane of motion, putting stress on the joint, which eventually breaks again.

Um from 2011 til they vlosed, Weaver Die cast Trucks were being made by MTH. Yes the standard lionel, atlas o, mth trucks really don't work on a Weaver car unless you are a big fan of "high water pants" look. However a few post above that mentioned two MTH part numbers is correct weaver die casr truck and is an exception to the norm stated in this post.
