A short story from “The Train Room” alias “The Man Cave”

This past weekend my two grandchildren spent the weekend at grandma & grandpa’s house. Adam age 6 and Noah age 5.  Grandma had the boys in the kitchen baking cookies.  They made grandpa a surprise cookie, which they brought to The Train Room. Check it out ………. The famous C&O Yellowbelly..........

Its late 1949 and the 1+ year old BP20 AB set is no longer pulling Pennsy's finest, already relegated to mail, express and secondary passenger trains.  The big Baldwin 2,000hp diesels were plagued with many problems but still made it into the 60s.  Here the photographer caught them pulling out of the yard with an express train and passing a freight headed by its cousin, a BF15.

The Passenger Shark is a Weaver model, the Freight Shark is a Lionel.

Those boys are getting big.

Here is my latest purchase - Lionel’s #8002 UP Berkshire. My parents gave my brothers and I one for Christmas when they were new in 1980.  Unfortunately we let it go in the estate sale.    I was surprised how affordable they are and I’m glad to have it back in my collection.  Upon receipt, I oiled and greased it and replaced the foam pad for the electronic board in the tender, well documented on this forum.  Thank you fellow forumites for this important tip as it had indeed disintegrated over time and would have resulted in certain disaster had I not.  It runs great and I’m surprised how well it pulls.  Brings back some great memories!

IRON HORSES vs. FARM HORSES

So my older son says this thread is Weekend Photo Fun, right?  So let's have some Fun this week.

Two passenger trains--one rerouted NYC Limited, one Texas Eagle--were scheduled to meet at Notch Junction.  The Iron Horses were surprised to also meet several Flesh-and-Blood Horses that had managed to get out of their pasture and began browsing for forage at the grade crossing.  Attentive engineers strove mightily--and successfully!--to rein in their iron beasts to avoid running down the live ones.  Locals, who found the event amusing, snapped these photos:

Palallin I know it's not the focus but I really like the tall tree!

I don't remember what kind it is or where I got it.  I think it is marketed as Large Scale.  I sprayed it with yellows as the layout is usually set in the fall.  I really intend to switch it out for a much bushier tree and put it near the wall (since it is so thin).
