A few weeks ago, I posted images of a classic Quality Craft PRR switch tower kit that I was assembling.  The kit is at least 30 years old. Believe me, it is a true craftsman kit and comes basically as a box of stripwood!  Now it is nearing completion.  Pretty much all that I have left to do is in stall the exterior railing, finish the interior, and install lighting.  Here are some images, as well as one of the prototype as it appeared in the PC era.

The kit came with a chimney casting that looked nothing like the prototype, so I scratch built a replacement chimney that looks like the real thing, was visible along the back of the tower along its entire height, and had the signature Pennsy taper on the top.  I also have included the first draft (not accurate and to be changed) of the track diagram board that will be mounted in the interior.

Although the model is of "Jacks" tower located in Jacks Narrows, west of Mifflin, I will be using it at Mifflin Interlocking as it is of the same architectural style as Jacks tower and very typical of Pennsy's Middle Division.  The "Mifflin" cast sign will be the last item to be installed.

I didn't need another loco.......but this Williams brass Mikado sat on ebay for weeks (29 day auction) and I finally figured one more will not hurt. SO GLAD I did buy her. It is super mint, never run, all paper work, tools and parts. It's  a later model with the heavy duty left lid box.

I do not have anything L&N but I do now. LOVE these Williams brass locos and this is one of the best.

So happy these locos do not have command control......keeps the price super low for us conventional runners!!!

With the 611 making her first run of 2017 from Roanoke to Spencer today, I thought I'd share a few pics of my MTH Spirit of Roanoke 611 and her excursion consist. This a complete 10 car set from the MTH 2016 V1 Catalog and just came out a few weeks back -  it represents a portion of the 611's mainline excursion consist in 2015.

I got a chance to stretch her legs on the North Penn Hirailers layout during an open run a few weeks back - I sure do appreciate their hospitality.

Since then I've since sent her over to the JDS shop to get the headlight modified so she'll have a twin sealed beam headlight like with what the 611 operates with currently.

Happy 2017! Hope everyone had a good & safe holiday season.
Now comes the crappy time when you have to clean up everything & put all the decorations away :)

I was able to finish my CNJ RDC cars over the break. The rest of the B&O lettering came off easily & after a quick bath, the shells were ready for decals

Hope to start some scenery on the upper level in the next week or so.

Lorenzo wanted to run some older power & rolling stock, so we got the 8380 & some billboard reefers on the main -

Picked up another LC set for the kids. I think they work great for them. The remote is so easy to use. I really liked the MN M7a set so we picked that to go along with his General set

First train of 2017 was this CSX K447 w/ a KCS leader. It breaks the early morning silence of a dreary New Years Day as it heads through Waxhaw, NC on former Seaboard rails
Image

Some of the few trains I caught of 2016 were up in VA - Both taken 12/28/16
Former Conrail SD60I 5593 leads an eastbound coal drag under the signals at Robinson, just west of Narrows, VA on the Christiansburg District

After spending the morning up on the Pokey, I got a H/U that the Valley was leading 22A, I figured why not try & go for it. I was able to beat her to Marion, VA & chase all the way to Bristol, TN. We see 22A passing one of the soon to fall N&W signals at SCHULEEN on the Pulaski District

Great job. What colors did you paint it.

The unique detail associated with Ol' Rivets is the reason I chose Lionel's Legacy version of the GG1 prototype.   I already own a few smooth ones.  At a casual glance, the fact that 4800 is made from a completely different set of tooling than it's offspring might go undetected.  And yet, the differences are endless.

In comparing the model with original prewar photos, it became clear that #1 received a wider spaced striping than subsequent GG1's.  It can be seen when comparing the stripe treatment over the air intake grills, which on 4800 almost fills the entire opening.  Later 5 stripe decoration only covered the upper two thirds.  The familiar gold stripe along the body bottom is absent, which might or might not be correct.

When at rest, each grey/blue cab light shines up from the cab floor.  More " unique to #1 " details here include, an indented sand hatch, window opening contours, position of the windshield wiper, the rain troughs over side doors and windows, plus an exposed bell.  The leading side window pillar includes a wind break, although not as wide, nor pronounced as on the real thing.

DGLE.......NOT!   Had it been the rich, dark color of the trees behind it, boy, that'd sure make it look handsome.  Unfortunately, my poor photography ( not altered ) accentuates that green to a military like concoction.

I've hardly had time to give it a thorough workout but am totally impressed with it's performance so far.  The stereo sounds are what really set these apart, and whether the quilling horn is authentic or not, it adds to the fun immensely.   Loads of bumps, scrapes and squeals are emitted, so adding a sound car or two might be in order.   If I had any doubts about installing catenary, they're gone now!

Good to know that there is still an independent hardware store that sells trains.

They have quite a layout.  The roundhouse must be busy.  They are controlling access to the turntable with block signals.

I took these pictures last week while in Greensburg, PA visiting family. The Cabin Cars and the Huey are at the Kirk S Nevin Rec Center in Greensburg. The Cabin Cars look like they may be used in conjunction with day care as there is play ground equipment in the rear. The Huey is a memorial  to a firefighter who flew one in Vietnam. IMG_3709IMG_3710IMG_3711IMG_3712IMG_3713

Happy New Year!! Great pics and vids so far everyone!!  Here is a photo a RR bridge that is a couple blocks from my house.  This bridge is decorated each Christmas season with lights and a bow.  I snapped these pictures tonight at dusk.  BTW - the bridge is the last surviving iron truss bridge designed by Wendal Bollman a 19th century engineer who designed many bridges for the B&O.  This particular design ( in the photos ) is of the first iron truss railroad bridge in the US.  This one, servings on the B&Os Patuxent Branch,IMG_2076IMG_2060IMG_2059IMG_2066IMG_2069IMG_2073 carried the B&O across the Little Patuxent River in Savage, Md.
