What a difference 9 hours makes.
Well, actually about three actual hours, but on a 3:1 fast clock, nine hours on the Spokane Southern.
This past weekend, I hosted a Timetable and Train Order session for folks new to TT&TO. I had three folks from the Dupage Division of the NMRA, and four folks that came over after the "March Meet" O scale convention on Saturday. Rounding out the crew was three of my regular crew, plus yours truly.
We had a blast. The session "training" started at 12:00 for those new to the railroad. Explained the basics of what the crews needed to do in order to run Timetable and Train Order on the Spokane Southern, such as:
- train orders and terminology
- clearance forms
- signing the train registers
- OSing to the Dispatcher at stations
- Reading the schedule
- Rights of Trains
- etc.
Gave the new attendees a quick walk through of the railroad, explaining location of sidings, train order boards, yard limits and other essentials. the clock started at 1:30 PM, and we ran to a little past 4:30 PM (the NCE 3:1 fast clock setting isn't precisely 3:1, it is a bit slower).
The session went wonderfully. I now have a whole host of personnel for my "extra board", not to mention a bunch of enthusiastic crew members that will enable us to run additional sessions in addition to my scheduled 2017 sessions with Rail Group Chicago.
Here was a photo I posted after the completion of our Rail Group Invitational Sunday session in February.
Worley yard was a pretty lonely place. There was a cut of cars for the local industries, and a cut of cars for westward trains to pick up.
Once the Saturday session started, the local guys got to work switching the local industries. Two freights came thru eastward, and one train westward.
The Kirsten Mills Turn, a local job, and the Bessemer Turn, which switches the steel mill yard, also returned to Worley.
The photo above shows what Worley yard looked at the end of the session. It isn't plugged, but at the start of the next session, we will need to call an extra train to take westward cars to South Spokane, as there is too many cars to handle on the run-thru's. Since the first thing that happened in the previous nine hours was to switch the refinery, there is now only one car spotted at the refinery. This was an "off spot" during the previous nine hours, when the refinery loading and unloading platforms were plugged solid.
Looking forward to the next session. Both Denver Empire Builder trains will run, the Noname local job, another Bessemer turn, and lots of extra freight trains. Guys will be very busy.
Regards,
Jerry
