"HONGZ" stands for HO scale, N scale, G scale, and Z scale.

Post your non-O scale stuff here!

A couple of photos from last Friday when the Spokane Southern arranged for a trial of a Southern Pacific H-24-66 on the Spokane Southern's rails.

Spokane Southern management was so impressed that we are hoping to arrange with Fairbanks Morse and extended field trial of a pair of H-24-66 locomotives.  We will also arrange to have a Northern Pacific dynamometer car available to conduct a fully instrumented test. *

*  Translation to reality - I'd really like to purchase a pair of Atlas H-24-66 HO scale locomotives in the Fairbanks Morse demonstrator scheme.  These were issues in four numbers, TM1 an 2 were the gold series, TM3 and 4 were the silver series.  If anybody can point me in the direction of these, I'd be most appreciative.   I am also looking for the brass model of the NP dynamometer car (I think W&R did them).

Regards,

Jerry

Happy 4th to all you Americans! Even with all our issues as a Nation, I'm SO GLAD I live in this country!

Onto the trains...

Received my Bachmann "new tooling" ("NT") Santa Fe 4-4-0 and it runs great. Also received my Bachmann NT UP 4-4-0 and it likewise runs great!

Never content to leave things alone, I've already experimented with different smoke stacks to see which I like better.  Stock, they come with these stacks:

Bachman_ATSF_440_1sm

Bachmann_UP119_1a

The UP #119 got two experiments. One was a diamond stack:

UP_DiamondStack

And also a funnel stack from a Mantua "General":

UP_Funnel

The Santa Fe got a Congdon stack:

ATSF_Congdon

In all, I think I like the diamond stack best on the UP #119, and I think the Congdon stack is a keeper on the Santa Fe.

In addition to the above engines that were received recently, two more Bachmann 4-4-0's are being shipped as I type: Another Santa Fe and a Western & Atlantic RR non-DCC version.  The duplicate Santa Fe is the reason for the stack change on the one above. That way, one will retain its box stock funnel stack, the one above will keep the Congdon stack. (I like variety.)  The non-DCC W&A engine will get likely get a Tsunami2 DCC/Sound decoder in good time.

All fer now!

Andre

Model Railroad "week plus" started officially for me on Thursday evening, and will run thru 11-Jul-16.  Thursday and Friday evening I started organizing all of my car cards and trains for my first "official" operating session scheduled for my Rail Group Chicago friends on 29-Jul.  This has been a long put off activity, since I did not want to start this until I had my mainline back in service.  Needed to spread out my car cards and start organizing them.  None of my waybills match up with my new operating scheme post layout expansion, so I have a LOT of writing to do after I get the trains staged.  Making up cards for all locomotives and cabooses too, which is an activity that I did not have done before.

Car card mess for session

I also made a sizeable purchase of MicroMark car card holders, and have them up in all of my towns and for my staging.  The five slot holder on the right is for West Worley, and each slot will be labeled for "Pick Up", "Set out", "Hold", "Off spot", and then the last slot will hold the small two way radios that I purchased for use on the railroad to talk to the operators and dispatcher.  The eight slot holder on the right will hold all of my staged trains in Butte, Montana on the west end of the railroad.

On Saturday, my friend Allen and I went to operate on two railroads in Champaign / Urbana for the start of the NMRA 2016 National Convention.

Rick Schroede'rs wonderful Danville and Western Railroad was first up at 11:00 AM, and we operated for 3 hours until 2 PM.  I drew the assignment for the Grape Creek turn, and my power was two ALCo C-424s.  Here they were waiting for me at the shop track.

Rick has a neat way of providing instructions for the crews on their trains.  He purchased these plastic pockets for holding the car cards, and the pocket had a card for the locomotive consist, and the train instructions.

Here is a link to Rick's web site, with great photos of his railroad, and a description.

Next up and 3:00 PM was Mike Lehman's fantastic Denver and Rio Grande Panoramic Division.  I operated Train 461 / 462, which was a 2nd class passenger train from RGS junction (Telluride in staging), all the way up to a town north of Silverton CO which I can't recall.  Mike runs his railroad under Timetable and train order, on a 6:1 fast clock.

I did not take any photos at Mike's (too darn busy watching the schedule, and the clock ), but here is a link to a bunch of his wonderful photos and info on his railroad.

I am forever impressed at how friendly and accommodating people are for opening up their homes to operate on their model railroads.  Both Rick and Mike were most gracious hosts, and both Allen and I had a wonderful time.

Regards,

Jerry
