Just rebuild all the smoke units on this Lionel VL BB
PS Scott she loved the layout and watching the trains run, wants me to build her a train room in our new house for her Polar Express and Thomas.
Just got back from Chicago where the Subway/El system rules!
Took the Blue Line to and from O'Hare.
Used the Red Line to see the Sox on evening and the Cubs another.
Here are a few pics....

I was traveling this past week....some fun....some not so......
While in Ohio I visited some hobby shops. One had 20% off new and 40% off used items. I found a LGB G scale passenger car for $12!!! No box but looks mint!!
They had a used MTH O scale Amtrak TurboTrain......I said I'll take it....$800 with 40% off..a deal!!! $480!!!
Owner said 'you picked the only item not on sale'.....I could have pushed the issue....but he wasn't having it....oh well.
I also visited a Menard's store. They had a good selection of trains. Sets, lots of box cars and buildings. I found one I did not have and could use. At $70 I passed.....but at $49 and my $11 rebate check in hand.....another DEAL! $38!!
This was all fun and games. But then I got a call from my son....he was hit by a SUV @ 70 mph while sitting in a construction zone in NC. He was badly beat up....but walking. I had to load up....had been home minutes....and go to NC and get them. Blessed they are just hurting....SUV has one in ICU. His Mustang in impound.
Just happy they are still with us. Thanks
Dave thank goodness your son and whomever he was traveling with are okay.
nice and SHINY !.....right off the show room floor......
Although I've been living in and out of Cambridge/Boston since my student days there in the early 70s and have ridden many of the MBTA lines, I never rode the Mattapan High Speed Line until this Wednesday. The 70+ year old PCCs run well and have been owned by the MBTA (or its predecessor) since they were built! The line actually cuts through a cemetery and has 2 grade crossings.
Starting at Harvard Square - Regretably I did not have my phone out near the JFK/UMass Red Line station where, in addition to the Ashmont Train I was on, there was a Braintree Train, an Alewife Train, and a Southbound Commuter Rail train.
Have a great weekend, everyone! Nothing new for this week, so I dug up a few from the archives. ALCo action!!...
This was my best day of rail fanning to date. I started in Marquette, Michigan at the operating ore dock:
Then proceeded to Gladstone, Michigan to get a pic of Soo Line 730. Sadly, this is as close as you can get as the loco is displayed on CN property right at the freight yard:
Then, I caught a glimpse of CN (WC)1569 an SW1500 & CN (IC)1204 an SW7RM, both remotely controlled!! They are at the end of this video and you have to be eagle eyed to catch them (and my daughters pillow popped into frame!):
Then, just to make things even sweeter, I caught this train south of Marinette and north of Oconto, Wisconsin:
What a day!!
My friend George and I went to Strasburg last week on a whim. Here are a few photos....
Rutland Boxcar in front of the engine house
DD1 (?) in front of RR Museum of PA.
NKP Berk at RR Museum of PA.
"John Bull 2", formerly operable, now on static display in the museum. The "real" Bull is just a short drive from me at the Smithsonian. Seen it many, many times.
What we really came for - the newly restored Lindbergh Engine, PRR #460. George has the Lionel Legacy #460 model. We intended to bring it to take his picture holding the model in front of the real one. Halfway up to Strasburg we realize we forgot to put the Lionel engine in the car......guess we have an excuse to come back!
The line-up at the "light" end of the museum.
Strasburg/N&W #475 simmering across the street. #475 is an ex-Norfolk and Western engine built in 1906 and my favorite engine at Strasburg. It was the first live steam locomotive I ever saw operate and ride behind. The N&W Historical Society was in town a week or two ago so the tender was re-lettered from "Strasburg" to "Norfolk and Western"
Strasburg's largest, 2-10-0 #90 arriving back on another run.
Plymouth switcher #2 taking the weekend off in the yard.
Cagney #3 was running shortened trips. The Strasburg is expanding their shop complex. Cagney's route is truncated at the grade crossing in the yard and no longer runs all the way to the end of the mechanical shops and no longer turns on the "Wye" behind the shop. As the track appeared to still be in place, I would imagine longer runs would continue after construction is finished. I love this little engine!
My second favorite at Strasburg, ex-Candian National #31 is having a "time and money permitting" overhaul. Here is it's cab out in front of the shop. We took the shop tour with two other gentleman. A terrific tour. It had been years since I last did it and we both really enjoyed it. Sam was terrific and didn't rush us and spent lots of time explaining each area of the shop.
This ex-B&O coach is undergoing a total restoration. If I recall, Strasburg spends around $1,000,000 on each coach restoration.
LO&S Motor Car is undergoing work. This car will be used as a TCA Shuttle for the York week open house. I'd like to go, sounds like fun!
Standing in the new expansion of their shop. Those are the UP Big Boy wheels in the center.
Railroad Museum of Long Island's narrow gauge Porter 0-4-0T is here undergoing restoration. Strange to see it out of the Hamptons. We were told it is near completion. Upon return to Long Island, it will operate on a semi-truck trailer equipped with rollers. It will not operate on rails.
Strasburg's #89 is nearing completion on an inspection. It is receiving a top to bottom, front to back paint job.
Thomas was resting, awaiting his next day of work. Would be kind of cool to see Thomas pull a freight train....
#475 heading in for the evening.
Riding "Hello Dolly" as I usually do when in Strasburg. Across the flats near Esbenshade.
I finally got the RailKing ILLINOIS CENTRAL offset-side open top hopper from Mr. Muffin's Trains that matches the Weaver ILLINOIS CENTRAL PS-2-CD covered hopper and K-Line IC covered steel coil car.

Picked up my new MTH NJ Transit P40s that Nicolas Smith had MTH do a custom run for them.
More pics and videos see my other post: https://ogrforum.com/topic/nj-transit-p40s
Patrick that jug band really gets around Patsburg. Still don't see horn section.
I've been waiting a while to set this one up.
NYO&W 101 and 102 are drilling a Borden's reefer past an abandoned spur and into a local creamery (out of picture, but in my imagination).

Wish I had my camera with me instead of my "nine." Saw something I do not recall ever seeing during my several decades on this blue orb. Except of course on one of my toy train layouts.
Live in the Salisbury, NC area where you can not come and go without crossing over double RR tracks. Well this morning in route to Winston-Salem had to stop at one of these crossing. There was a mixed freight with distributed power. Then I noticed behind it traveling in SAME direction a faster container train.
It was strange sight both tracks occupied with trains going in same direction.
Wish I had my camera.
as a train pulls in on track two....
passengers mingle awaiting their train to pull out on track one.....
people standing on the platform can watch the train pull in thru the windows of the train on track one.....busy day at the station.....
later on that evening on it's travels under a bright moonlit night....
quite the next morning as train workers prepare the trains for their next travels....
soon another train pulls out of the station through the yard area on the start of it's journey for the day......
