I have a Lionel PWC 6-11106 N and W 746 and it suddenly started acting very weirdly and I can't figure it out. I had a friend over this afternoon to show him the projects I've been working on the last few months and the last thing we did was get out my new Bachrus roller set and put an engine on it. I used this engine (it was the first engine I tested on the stand when I got the rollers a few weeks ago and everything was fine). Today I put it up on the rollers and ......a headlight and no movement. I put some other engines up there and they all ran fine. So......I told my friend....."I know what I'll be doing when you leave".  I just spent the last three hours working on it. I took the shell off and resoldered any wiring that looked loose or pinched. I was using alligator clips to power it and it seemed that it would run with the shell off, but not on. Then I got it to run with the shell on and on the roller stand. Put it on my layout.....nothing but a light. Put it back up on the rollers and it ran. Checked my layout transformer with other engines.....they all ran fine. But every time I took it off the rollers and onto the layout, it wouldn't run. How can that be?  Just now it was running a bit erratically on the rollers, but I could get it to run. I'm tired and hungry now and need a break from it. It has TMCC, but I was running conventional. If anyone has any ideas as to what the problem could be, I'd appreciate the input.

Shortly after I posted the thread I realized that part of the problem was the TMCC base. Thought it was unplugged, but wasn't all the way out. Another problem which I discovered when I took the shell off before I posted,   was loose antenna wires. They were among the wires that I resoldered/rewired. Pulling the plug  all the way out on the base enabled it to run on the main layout. But something is is still not right. As I mentioned above, it started running erratically on the rollers at the end of my session with it. So....something else must be loose. I plan on going back down and popping the shell off again to see if anything is pinched. The program switch is in the right position.    I suspect a short somewhere. I'll see what I can find. Thanks for all the tips....it all helps.

Well, I found another set of bad wires......this time it was the wires from the motor to the firebox bulb. This whole thing was very surprising as I haven't had the shell off for quite awhile and yet the antenna wires and bulb wires managed to either break or come loose. But, I'll take bad wires rather than fried circuit boards anytime. I never really suspected the boards, though. When I built my track stand for the rollers, I attached a circuit breaker and TVS diode to prevent that kind of thing when it's on the rollers. But now it's running well on the layout as well as the rollers, so hopefully it's fixed. Accent on the "hopefully".
