Beautiful locomotive and a key unit in the Series carrying the name of both the old and "new" Norfolk Southern Railway.

Coincendentially, the announcement yesterday that restoration of the old Norfolk Southern Depot in Wilmington, N.C. is underway with a $500,000 initial contribution by the State DOT. Concludes a long battle by Coastal historians and rail fans to save the rapidly declining structure.

Dewey,

If it it Wilmington, NC, then the restoration is for the old Atlantic Coast Line freight buildings, not Norfolk Southern. The Wilmington RR Museum is headquartered in one of the buildings, the other was used as a convention center. I spent many a weekend in those buildings during the 80s as a volunteer at the museum. The original depot and other buildings were razed in 1970 as part of an urban renewal program to build Cape Fear Technical College. The 1960 era depot was also torn down a few years ago to make more room for the college. Glad to hear the work is being done, those buildings are in pretty bad shape.

Hopefully the NCTM can get the Southern and Norfolk Southern heritage units for display in June during the Rail Days event. Haven't heard any plans except a NS employee luncheon.

SPMan,

You are correct. The new MTH catalog shows this Heritage Scheme on an SD-70ACe. I spoke to Paul Johnson at Catoctin Mountain Trains about this and forwarded a picture of the recently painted engine to him. He sent the picture to MTH and received an e-mail from Mark Hipp at MTH, stating that they will be correctly producing that paint scheme on an ES44AC model. I'm glad to see MTH is going to produce this engine, "as seen on the rails". These Heritage paint schemes are absolutely well done by NS. The photos of these engines in revenue service on railpictures.net are fantastic, to say the least!!

Great Job, NS!!!

No argument from me, I have never been to the site, but the press release in the Charlotte Observer definitely said Norfolk Southern and it quoted a N.C. Department of Archives person.

The "New" Norfolk Southern contributed to the fund according to the same article. Seems strange that they would contribute to restoring an ACL facility. Something is really mixed up!

I didn't realize you had left your position at the Transportation Museum. I came down and picked up a copy of your book a couple of weeks ago. Good job, some great old photos.!
