I predict that it will be an interesting catalog. 2014 was a blockbuster year for Lionel, so it seems logical to me that there will be items of significant interest.

 

We don't have long to wait.

A customer loyalty program in which Lionel will trade in an even swap plus $35 per item shipping and handling new merchandise for any Postwar or MPC products in at least C-7 or R-5 condition.

It would be great if they put more actual railroad paint schemes on the plastic body Standard O Scale freight cars introduced between 1985-1999, or sell undecorated bodies. 

 

The Standard O Scale plastic body freight cars should all have roller bearing trucks with the swinging couplers mounted on them when they are made in the factory.

I will likely be Lionel's worst prospective buyer in 2016.  Why?  Because I'm "spent out" with items that caught my eye in 2014 and 2015... and I didn't even buy the VL Big Boy!!!    BTW, not all of those items were from Lionel.  MTH, GGD, and even Atlas-O got a share of my hobby dollars as well.

 

So in all honestly, the importers could EASILY skip catalogs in 2016 (even 2017!) and I wouldn't even skip a beat.  I've been saying it all along... the biggest challenge the importers face is that many model train enthusiasts have already purchased more trains than they'll ever need/use.  And once we start building layouts, there's a fair chunk of dollars that get routed to those efforts too.  So acquiring more trains -- aside from a piece of rolling stock here and there -- is no longer a priority.

 

I can't even begin to list the number of "great deals" I've turned down when dealers offer super sales nowadays.  Years ago, I'd be all over these opportunities.  But now, it's an entirely different landscape -- even at super, bargain-basement prices.

 

I wish the importers all the best as they continue to raise prices in hopes of luring enthusiasts to buy new product while they deal with the instabilities of overseas manufacturing.  But there will be little -- if any -- preorder dollars coming from yours truly for stuff featured in upcoming catalogs.  I wouldn't even mind if a few items I've already pre-ordered for 2015 slip into 2016... a very likely scenario anyway.

It would be great if photos of production test models of the new SD40 diesels will be in the catalog, so we know what is actually coming.

 

The aluminum body 4650 Cu. Ft. ACF CENTER FLOW 3-bay covered hoppers have to be produced in the SOO LINE graphics from 1972 and 1973.

Since this is a thread based on what I hope for and not what I think will actually be in it here is my wish list:

• A Visionline articulated steam engine, something of this flavor will do:

Erie, Triplex (2-8-8-8-2)

C&0, Allegheny (2-6-6-6)

SP, AC-9 (2-8-8-4)

Virginian, AE (2-10-10-2)

• More Visionline cars with freight sounds, Steam era coal cars this go around would be nice.
• A Visionline hotbox car.
• SP, AC-4 that was never made from 2008, with whistle steam
• A NW caboose from the steam era to match the Y6b
• A SP caboose from the steam era to match the AC-12
• a set of Virginians 120-ton 12-wheel coal gondolas
• USRA emergency war single sheath box cars and coal hoppers
• WWII propaganda plastered cars

What I hope for does not require new tooling, just reissuing three products that they have already made in new paint schemes or with upgraded electronics.

 

- Their Legacy PRR 4-4-2 Atlantic in post WWII paint (no pin striping).

- Their Legacy F3 ABA in as delivered PRR paint* (freight green with one stripe).  Since we are hoping here, how about individual sale of A and B units both equipped with power and sound.

- Their PRR T1 4-4-4-4 from 2000 with Legacy.  I'm not interested in Lionel copying MTH's version of this engine because the two prototypes had their streamlining removed soon after they were built, well before my layout's era.

 

*none of the manufacturers have released a recent production F3 in this paint scheme.  I would have bought Atlas O's F3 Phase 2 in this scheme if they had done it.

VL: Q2, Q1, AC9, S1, T1....they are lucky to have such a long list of beloved locos...

2 of your list of 4 desired "compounds" were not Compound locos; the C&O/VGN 2-6-6-6

and the SP AC-9 were both Simple Articulateds. The other 2 did, indeed, use their steam twice and were Compounds.

 

Mr. Lionel, per AC-9 - please note:

 

I have the Lionel AC-9 from a few years back - which modeled the original coal-burning version. Vision/Legacy would not get me to buy another (maybe a "natural" Pilot model...?)

of those - though it is my favorite articulated - but a proper rendition (including tender - some were actually different tenders, not just oil-converted) of the later converted-to-oil-burning version would get me very interested.

I would like to see a full scale chessie steam special.

Lionel has been growing their LionChief Plus+, locomotive in both Steam & Diesel. I would like to see Lionel, keep growing this line.

     I like LionChief Plus+ because when a visitor comes to my train room, I would hand them a LionChief Plus+ controller over my MTH / DCS Remote, that operates 19 locomotives. The MTH / DCS is to complex and confusing. I also like using my LionChief Plus+ locomotives.

     I would like to see scale, in the LionChief Plus+ line up.

I usually don't get involved with "wish list" posts, but, why not?

 

I'd like to see a late 1800's early 1900's scale steam engine. Something along the lines of the Williams 10 wheeler, only with add-on details. It could even be generic, as long as it isn't Pennsy! All the importers seem to want to add that firebox, then letter them for any railroad. Don't care what operating system they put in it.

 

Other than that, I guess I'd just like some tinker toys...

Welllll.....  I could hope for re-emergence of some of Weaver's best....assuming they have the tooling.  Not likely, though, considering the lead times for catalog layout/printing, business/tooling arrangements with a new mfg location, etc... 

 

That said, I'll continue to hope for new products of interest....not including mammoth 2-4-6-8 Vision Line behemoths that leak 'steam' from every orifice and have a price tag that causes even Wall Street to blush.  Example of what I'm looking for?....B&O-style wagon-top covered hoppers!  Steeple cab electrics!  Slope-sided cupola cabeese (ala CB&Q, DT&I, AA, Wabash...et al.)  More 15" aluminum passenger cars with the interiors/riders/LEDs/diaphragms/sprung trucks/etc. level of detail in other road names...smooth sided and/or ribbed.  Etc., etc., blah, blah.  All standard O...not traditional. 

 

"Traditional" items?...lower prices, lower prices, lower prices.   It's more than disheartening to hear our (LHS) younger customers eager to buy something to add to their starter set with their accumulated allowance money, only to find it far beyond reach.  (So, playing games with your thumbs on a small game device seems like an appropriate pocket-pablum alternative, after all!)   

Not likely, of course.  Probably more of the same (yawn...).

NYC S-3 electric. They offered the S-1 (#100) and the S-2 - but not the S-3. The S-3's

frame was a bit longer, but the body was the same size as that of the S-2. Many would not care, but many of us NYC guys (there's a few) would snatch it up. Complete the set (I have the first two).

NC&StL streamstyled 4-8-4 - Yellowjacket and/or Stripe version.

It's a niche; will never happen, BUT - Lionel could use the chassis and running gear from the Reading T-1 - I've investigated for the scratch building project.

 

I know - most of you read that and just heard crickets, so here's a photo of the "Yellowjacket" version; the later "Stripes" order had no skirting - just a stripe. The locos were black and the lighter areas were a rich yellow. Right up there with Dreyfuss,

N&W "J", PRR T-1 in looks.

(Incredibly, one was saved. In Nashville - but it is in the later version - the nose and pilot treatment was changed in later life - and not for the better).
