What Didn't You Buy That You Now Wish You Would Have?

I got lucky!  I wanted this Atlas O SW8 when it came out, but didn't have the funds at the time.  I thought I would pick one up on the secondary market.  I quickly learned the realities of modern toy trains.  There were none to be found ....anywhere.  I wasn't even sure that they were actually produced.  I had given up hope of ever finding one.  About 4 years ago I was surfing "The Bay" when I found this one, NIB, at a reasonable price.  Needless to say, I jumped on it with both feet!

 

I learned my lesson.  If I see something cataloged that I want, I pre-order it.

What, me worry?

One of our forum sponsors had a MTH NYOW FT B-Unit listed on their site FOREVER... But, no matching ABA set. As I did not have the ABA set, I didn't see much sense in having the lone B-Unit. Flash forward several years, I found the ABA set eventually, but can't find the lone B-Unit now! Definitely wish I had bought it then.

Priority is to save up just in case Lionel makes another 3751.

The only newly made piece that I have some regrets about not purchasing, and is not readily found today is the reproduction of the #51 Navy Yard switcher. So I purchased a couple of originals instead.
There are still some modern era (Post 1969) pieces that I'd like to have. I purchase them when samples come along in the condition / price that I want to pay.

Years ago on the bay there was a complete 10 pc AMT CNW passenger set in near mint condition.  Have not seen one since.

  At one of the Allentown shows I found a Lionel PRR TMCC ABA Set of Sharks unused at the Nicholas Smith tables for $300. Unfortunately I was hunting for something else and passed them by. When I returned they were gone. I never found what I was looking for and will always kick myself for not picking up the sharks. They were the ones with the two powered A units, real nice.

Art, I used to like you. Your posts are thought provoking and fun. Your layout progress is a blast to follow and you always include such great photos. One day I was even hoping I could bring my boys to see the layout in person. Such a shame that your positive additions to this forum are now for not.

What kind of man rips open another's gaping wound and empties a jar of salt in it? Art the "Chugman" that's who!!

All joking aside...

For me it has been (more to come I'm sure):

1. MTH Amtrak Genesis Phase V paint at the blow out prices from Ready to Roll in Miami. I think it was something like $300 for the power and dummy. I've been combing my old magazines to look for the ads that seemed to run for ever! Why would I look for the ad? Just to torture myself of course! I passed on them since they didn't have any matching cars. Classic!

2. Lionel BN SD40-2 Legacy version. It's all I need to complete my work train. I have the TMCC crane and boom car and other cars. Just couldn't get myself to agree with the high price. It was around the time of a large price difference between MTH and Liobel locos and I was going to teach someone a lesson about cost and supply. Oops guess I got schooled!
